Chow has to be considered, or the braincramps didn't leave the islands when the AD was fired. With all due respect to McMackin, Chow has deserved a head coaching job for years. That place would be the perfect fit.

Would be nice to see McMackin in Dallas, too, of course.

No, it probably won't because everything is time critical now especially with regards to recruiting. If this were the scenario several weeks ago, I'm sure Chow would've been been heavily lobbied for and considered as the top candidate. At this juncture though, he may not be the right fit with the requirements that the university is looking for anyway. That is they are looking for a quick and seamless transition. They are also looking for someone that wants to be there. From all indications, he didn't even bother to confirm if he was interested or not (something that Gilbride at least did last week) nor did he apply. Norm has contacts in the islands but since none of them were making any noise, the silence said it all.

As to the quick transition part, this is why they are looking to hire from within since the template is already in place. An outsider may have different ideas including bringing in their own staff. Chow is from Hawaii but that is about it. He is still an outsider since he has had no ties to UH and he himself would have to transition into the head coaching role (completely different from being an OC). He'd also need to get familiar with the coaches and the players quickly and put things into motion in a very compressed timeframe. Chow's offense also has some subtle differences from the R&S which would require players that Hawaii does not have. You are looking at having the program possibly falling behind 2-3 years at minimum whereas hiring McMackin, the fall off won't be as drastic and will only require filling the gaps from departures in skilled positions as a result of graduation or the NFL draft.

I think Norm should at least get a chance at being a head coach. Getting fired as a coordinator does not bring ones next job as a head coach. He needs to get a D-1 coordinator job then onto his head coach chances.
