Excited about JJ Offense - But what about D?

Postby WorldStang » Tue Jan 15, 2008 9:50 pm

*** NOTE*** Just saw a thread on D a bit further down.. my bad. Respond if you like..

Granted last year we sputtered on both ends of the field - especially in the later half on the season with wayyy too many turnovers.

June can identify and fix an offense..

But what about our problems at linebacker and D-line? I feel okay about secondary. Most of those guys have experience and will hopefully be ready to fly.. but we are hurting for size and experience everywhere else.

Also feel pretty good about O-line.. many seniors and good depth.. yes?

I've seen alot of talk about flipping guys from TE to LB, like Andrew McKinney. I love the idea.. and think he's been completely under utilized. The guy has a huge motor and needs to see the field much more.

Who's coaching D? Or Who is expected to coach D? What kinda schemes has JJ run in the past?

Thoughts? Speculation? Prayers? Hopefully the later not needed as bad as we think.

Andrew McKinney will never see the LB position unless he massively loses weight-he'll be at DE. Matter of fact I'd be less surprised to see him at DT than LB-ain't going to happen.

I liked that Youri Yenga kid. I thought eventhough he's abit undersized, he got off the ball well, and got after it pretty relentlessly. I'd be interested to see if his frame could handle another 20 - 25 lbs and if he could maintain that quickness. At 240+ lbs I think he has the potential to be as solid as Rogers.

What did you guys think about the Serge kid? I thought he did alright.

I think you're right though, not a lot stood out in my mind looking back that doesn't concern me for next year from the D-Line and LB crew. Like you said, let's flip a TE over to DE or something.

Your D will get the ball run down their throats and poor tackling -- especially early on in the season.

That's typical of JJ's teams. And, just typical SMU football.

Why does JJ's teams struggle to win and tackle early on in the season? B/c you won't be doing any tackling in practice!

JJ believes in "non-contact" practices, so it takes awhile for his teams to get use to game speed and tackling at game speed.

Plus, it's a finesse offense. So, when you play teams that have big physical O-line a.k.a Georgia; La.Tech. You'll get the ball run down your throats.

Oh yeah, another reason why you'll struggle on D -- YOU don't have Coach MACK ATTACK BABY!! 8)

Who is MACK ATTACK?

- JJ won ZERO WAC Champ. WITHOUT MAC ATTACK

- With MAC ATTACK JJ won one; one tied (99')

-MAC ATTACK was once the leader of the D at "The U" -- that's Miami -- when they won the National Champ, with Ray Lewis, The Rock Dewayne Johnson, Warren Sapp. AND, had the #1 Defense in nation that year.

More great news, MAC ATTACK is an excellent recruiter, once named Big 12 Recruiter of the Year while at Texas Tech.

Great news for you? JJ STINKS at recruiting... why do you think he's begging and throwing big $$$ at Reinbold to go live in Dallas? Which is the only way anybody would ever live on that farm, you call a campus...

Looks like we're on our way to 5 more Wac Champ.!!!

Yes, Wac Champ. are pathetic, but we'll take it over a Conf. USA Champ.! 8)

Does singing the "My Little Ponies" theme song count as a brave display?

It's a huge long shot if not an impossibility, but Ed Orgeron would be an awesome D coordinator. He was the D line coach for many years at USC and went on to have 3 unsuccessful years as head coach at Ole Miss. He is an awesome recruiter as well as a good defensive mind, I just think he works better as an assistant than head coach.
