Coach Reinbold is a HUGE hire for SMU

Postby Garret » Thu Jan 17, 2008 12:52 am

I'm not sure if SMU fans realize just how important coach Reinbold was to UH, but UH fans know and there is a lot of sadness on UH fan sites and worry about recruiting.

1. Many people here are talking about how coach McMackin is a great recruiter and crediting that for Hawaii's success...but McMackin did not recruit a SINGLE player that played for UH last season. He was hired in April 2007, well after NLI signing day.

2. Coach Reinbold was the MAN for UH recruiting...and you can see a *huge* difference in the quality of UH recruits before and after Reinbold joined UH. Their recruiting classes with Reinbold far exceeded any others I can remember, and were by far the best JJ had at UH. The one constant? Reinbold led the recruiting for those classes.

3. Reinbold was in charge of recruiting Texas for UH and got a TON of high-quality recruits. UH had no Texas pipeline before him, and they ended up with their entire starting secondary, one starting WR, and a key DT from Texas due to Reinbold. He's gotten players from JCs in Texas and California...and that is what SMU is going to need right away.

4. Reinbold is a very good man, dynamic speaker, sincere, and extremely fan friendly. He came to at least two events that the UH fans organized through our message board and was very impressive at both. The man can recruit, he can motivate, and he can coach several positions depending on where he is needed. There is a great video that was on the Honolulu Advertiser website during the season which showed him talking to his DL players about pride, about how they represent the players that came before them, and about how they need to live up to the standard those players set. The fact that both DEs from the previous year were drafted by the NFL, plus other UH DL had long NFL careers, helped his point.

5. I have read on this board how SMU needs lineman. I just exchanged e-mails today with a parent of a player in Hawaii who will probably be visiting SMU in an upcoming weekend. The player has other offers but he'd be happy to follow Reinbold to SMU. SMU would be very fortunate to get this player. I just had lunch with his father a couple of weeks ago when I was in Hawaii and got to see some video highlights...impressive.

6. Normally when a coach leaves fans ignore them or go off on them--see how Rich Rodriguez's family got death threats in Virginia. I know so many people who called Reinbold to wish him well that when I called his cell phone 30 minutes ago his voicemail box was full and I couldn't leave my message thanking him for his work at UH and wishing him the best at SMU.

7. By the way, Reinbold led the defensive recruiting at UH while JJ led the recruiting on offense. If you see the number of stars UH got on both sides of the ball, UH got much higher-rated people on D. And that is why the team did so much better the last 2 years (11-3, 12-1).

JJ's philosophy is that the offense will recruit players, and it has worked. Dan Morrison's job was not to chase after QBs...he had to review the 100+ DVDs sent to Hawaii by QBs and select the few that JJ should look at. JJ then picked who they would go after...which this year was Bo Mitchell and Kevin Craft.

Great info Garret, thanks for posting it. Sounds like a great pickup for us.

We all hope that McMackin is as good as advertised, and that he is able to make the transition a lot smoother for your team and the fans.

It is a GREAT pickup...I'm sad for Hawaii but I know that SMU fans are going to love him. The fact that he already has shown he can recruit in Texas is huge. I do wonder if the players in Texas that Reinbold got to commit to UH will go to UH or SMU now.

By the way, his cell phone number is about to change once he moves to Dallas, but I was tempted to post it on this forum to see if anyone would call him to welcome him to SMU. I won't post the number, but those interested might want to click on this link:

• Texas native and Hawaii commit Chris Banjo is not ready to leave the mainland just yet. June Jones' arrival at SMU has the Sugar Land (Texas) Kempner safety considering the Mustangs. Though he still loves Hawaii, Banjo's relationship with assistant coach Jeff Reinebold and his belief in Jones' coaching staff have him entertaining the possibility of staying a lot closer to home to play at SMU.
Info on Chris Banjo:

Rivals.com profile: (2-stars)

Rivals article:
http://footballrecruiting.rivals.com/co ... cid=753340
....................Sounds like a good DB prospect. 4.5 40 speed and 37" vertical....Just don't understand the low Rivals 5.1 personal rating ? However, JJ and staff have proven to be really good at doing their own evaluations. Just look at all the Hawaii players being drafted in the NFL.
