Revival

THE GOOD

Jones says Aloha (the goodbye kind) to Warriors

I, for one, could not be happier to see former Hawaii coach June Jones heading back to the mainland to revive Southern Methodist.

Jones, who went 9-4 in his first season at Hawaii after inheriting the 0-12 Warriors, is the perfect fit to re-energize a program that has seen only one winning season since coming off NCAA probation in 1989.

This past season, Jones led the Warriors to an undefeated regular season, a Western Athletic Conference title and the school's first-ever BCS bowl game appearance.

Former freshman All-American quarterback Justin Willis will likely become a household name in Jones' patented run-and-shoot offense.

If Keith Claverle says there is going to be a revival, damn't there is going to be a revival...

The more I think about it, I believe that Justin will come into his own this year. I'm excited to hear that we'll probably have JUCO help and other options if he fails, but hopefully he won't. He's shown some pretty questionable football smarts out there in the past, but also he hasn't had a whole lot to work with. There have been times when Justin has downright carried this team with his legs and ability to scramble. I can't help but smile when I imagine Junes run and shoot and seeing Justin making huge throws in and out of the pocket. The guy definitely has confidence and it will be higher than ever if he wins over Jones. We have no reason to not be positive about next year.

Should Jones get the QB he wants -- and Kevin Craft is definitely still in the picture -- then Justin is going to have to fight to keep his job. And if he keeps it, then he will be a far better QB than he was in 2007.

It should be a knockdown drag out fight for that position in two-a-days

competition is a good thing. it elevates the level of play by all parties and the better player will see the field. that said, don't let bigdaddy0U812 see this, or he'll go on a jwill rant.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

Willis will be an inside receiver in the new offense.

We need someone to come in and light a fire under JWill's [deleted]... he's known he's the man for the last two years, and I don't feel like he has progressed all that much since his freshman campaign. A little competition never hurt anyone!

Nah...I don't think he will on this thread. He agrees that competition is a good thing and will certainly push JWill. He just thinks that JWill will rise to the occasion. I'm cool with that. What he gets tired of is the perception, justified or otherwise, that JWill is being piled on by those of us who post here. Generally, though, he's too wound up to just say that. He starts ripping on people and razzing them, and they rip and razz back, and the whole thing winds up a rant.

FWIW, Justin finished #55 in NCAA passing efficiency this year. True, not quite up to his freshman all american standards but good enough to put him in front of Matthew Stafford at GA, Chase Clement at Rice, Casey [deleted] at Arkansas and the kid from UCF among others.

I'd be curious to see where he finished in the number fumbles among those mentioned above. Don't get me wrong - I'm a fan of JW, but I'm really hoping Jones or someone on his staff teaches him how to carry the ball. JW also puts way too much pressure on himself to carry the entire team, instead of delivering the ball. Every play doesn't have to be spectacular - hopefully last year was a good lesson for him to play within himself. He really should flourish in this type of offense - will be a blast to watch him.

JW did a pretty good job given the circumstances. He played with heart when everything was down. I don't know for sure if he will be the QB in JJ offense, but he should have the inside track. This kid is good and has the potential to be great. If a few more stepped up their play, SMU would have had a much better season. Hope and would expect he will start as SMU's QB. Some of his decisions where questionable last year, but he had no choice but to try to carry this team on his on his back at times. Coaching made a huge difference in last years W/L figures.

JWill and others were playing with despiration last season. That should change this year as the key will be learning and operating the new system. I expect a cooler JWill. 8)
