Ok, stop with the lawyer talk. Sure it happens, but not very often does it happen 8 months before the game. It also sucks for Tech because this can have real consequences. In '04 when Auburn went undefeated and didn't make it to the Championship game, they had a cancellation like this and had to add a IAA team and that did just enough to their strength of schedule to keep them out of the Championship Game. Tech is not going to the Championship game, but this is not an insignificant thing.

Why do we care what happens to Tech? Sure it may be a crappy thing for Tulsa to do on such short notice, but I honestly don't care because it's Texas (our coach is a [deleted]) Tech!

I don't care, but I was just responding to the suggestion that its not slimy.

I'm not an attorney either. However, I will say that when we discuss legal issues in business, I ask my counsel three questions at the outset of every discussion.

1. What's the law?
2. Where is the grey area?
3. What are the practical consequences one can expect regardless of the legalisms?

I think Tulsa's actions fall into the category of #3.

Graham is a cutthroat coach, and Tulsa plays cutthroat vs. other schools. To quote Pulp Fiction "...Don't know if I'd call [them] filthy...but [they] definitely dirty...".

Tulsa vs. Arkansas used to be a traditional game for the hog callers and the inland hurricaners from the 1920s through the 1980s The series ended in 1991 or so.

I had forgotten that Rayburn. You are correct. I recall my father taking me to a Arkansas/Tulsa game in the early 60's when Jerry Rhome was QB for Tulsa. If I recall Tulsa upset Arkansas in that game.

I think Texas State for a season opening is perfect, but that's just me. Hopefully we will avoid the banana skin and get the season off to a great start with a drubbing (I'm thinking like the 55-9 over Arkie State in 2006).

Personally I am giddy with excitement (but that might just have been the Pig Run video!)

Now TT has $150K more to pay another opponent, which may finally be a sufficiently competitive offer. I assume the '09 game was also in Lubbock.

2 comments:

1) Once we start beating teams like UNT & Tx St comfortably each and every time, then maybe we should stop scheduling them. Hard to instill confidence in your team without a few wins, even if they are against "lesser" schools.

2) Over the course of the next few years, we play some decent non-conf games: Texas Tech, TCU, Mizzou, A&M, Navy, and Baylor so they aren't all against low end schools (Baylor notwithstanding, and assuming Mizzou and Navy continue their recent success)

I want us to enter conference play no worse than 2-2 the next 2 years, and would prefer 3-1. It made me sick when we would enter non-conf play 0-3 (when we only had 11 games) because we lost to Tech, OSU, and TCU for a couple years in a row, and we were only 1-3 the last 2 seasons.

Give Graham credit for not wanting an a$$-whippin on Opening Day.

B-T-W, what is our margin of victory (loss) on last 4-5 games against the same TT?

I understand the money aspect of the game for an SMU or Tulsa, but you can get the same $$$ money against other solid programs that don't have such an offense to prepare for, of which you'll never face again that season.

Anybody got an idea what the over is going to be for the SMU/Tech game? I'm thinking its in the 80's.
