OT: Question for Hawaii fans on the board

Post by RGV Pony »

I might as well use our new friends to my own personal and selfish benefit, so here goes.

In August the family is going to Hawaii; as you might imagine, the better condo options on Oahu & in Maui were booked. The plan is to stay at a property near Kona on the big island, and spend a day or so on each end of the trip doing the stuff one does on Oahu.

Question: what's the best local airline for HNL to Kona? What do you guys use? Besides golf and volcanoes, what's the best thing about the big island? What sucks about the big island?

Thanks, and fellow ponyfans, sorry for the self-serving post. Feel free to use it to your benefit as well.

There are 3 local airlines (Hawaiian, Aloha, Go) and we go with the cheapest one. Go airplanes are all small prop jobs I think.

These links are from the little brocheres that are found all over Waikiki.

The big island is all scenery my friend, nothing to really do except soak up nature and go on some serious hikes. Maui, however, kicks [deleted].

We flew inter-islands on this outfit, which I found to be the most reasonable price.

It does. I highly recommend Kauai. It is absolutely stunning. We flew Hawaiian Air from Honolulu to Kauai. It was a great flight. Nice leg room and the kids loved the juice they served. :)

Actually a good idea would be to go with GO airlines. No, they are not prop engine planes. They are jet engine planes like your own personal private jet except that you have to share it with 30 or so other people. Good value at $29.00 bucks each way. If not, then I recommend Aloha airlines. If you go to Hawaii be sure to check out Captain Cooks monument, Kealakekua bay, Honaunau (The city of refuge) Both fantastic for snorkeling! Lot's of marine life and colorful fish. I used to live on the Big Island. Good luck and Aloha!!!!!!

I don't agree... I'm from hawaii but Hawaiian airlines is a larger carrier and at times the wait is longer because they carry more passengers and takes more time.

I'm here in Hilo, Hawaii. In Kona my favorite hotel is the Hilton Waikaloa Village. They have super pools, jacuzzis, boat rides, a monorail system, and some slides. You can even take a tram for like a dollar to the King's Shops which is an outdoor mall. In Hilo you have the Prince Kuhio Plaza Mall, Wal Mart, Home Depot, Ross, Office Max all near the mall area. There are discount movies downtown at Kress Cinemas for movies that are about a month old for about 1 - 2 dollars. The main movie theater is at the mall. It also rains very frequently in Hilo. Rainbow Falls is a popular attraction and a lot of people like to go to Big Isle Candies. They give out free candy samples there but I believe they are expensive. The Hilo side doesn't have many good beaches, people mainly go to the 4 miles area which are the swimming areas I believe that is past the pier. By that location is also Ken's House of Pancakes which is open 24 hours and it's my favorite restaurant here in Hilo.
I'm actually thinking about going to Dallas / Fort Worth after going to Disneyland in July because I want to maybe move there in a few years. But what is there to do there such as entertainment?
