Saban Struggles to Replace Applewhite

Post by huskerpony »

Saban tried to steal the Nebraska OC and offered him at least $75,000 more--some sources have said the new OC may get $400,000 or more.

He has now been turned down by Jeff Brohm (Louisville), Shawn Watson (Nebraska), and Scott Loeffler (Michigan). And possibly Gary Crowton (LSU) and Tom Clements (Green Bay).

I know not a lot of people want to move to Tuscaloosa, but if you are having this much trouble luring an OC with $400,000 to work for an HC that won a national championship, I can't imagine recruiting is going well either!

That would be a poor assumption. They have the #2 class in the country and argueably their best in two decades...Rusty Burns could be their OC in two years and they'd win 10 games.

Maybe, but that's still a lot of people turning down a lot of money. (And for an assistant, that's a bigger deal to turn down a couple hundred thousand dollars--unlike a HC going to a BCS school for a little less.)

I suppose you have a better chance of being successful from Michigan, but not necessarily from Nebraska or LSU. If they do have the #2 recruiting class, these guys should be jumping at the chance for this job even more. Something must be amiss in Sabanland.

(However, your assumption that having a top recruiting class automatically results in good outcomes is ridiculous--look at Nebraska and Notre Dame this year. You still have to have great coaches.)

Yeah, Rusty would get them 10 over 2. Sounds about right.

From what I hear, Saban is not a real peach to work for.

Saban should go after the OC at ULM.

According to MA, you better have that phone charged up at all times - you're "on call" 24-7 --- he says it is 4th and 1 day all day, every day at the Crimson Tide coaches bunker.

Exactly. Saban is an egomaniacal jerk. His assistant coaches loathe him and there is no job security past a single season. Also, one of my former law clerks played on his 2003 championship team for LSU and said the guy was just not likeable. Definitely not a players coach.

EDIT: Also, FWIW, Saban used to go to my church and would high-tail it out of there right after communion so he wouldn't have to be inconvenienced by people who might want to say "hello."

Yeah, right.

Rusty, that's the ticket.

ULM didn't win because their offense was better. They won because Bama put a nice pretty bow on the ball and handed it to them with a muffin basket.

that is one way to put it . . .

another way to put it is they overlooked them 8)

still another would be they all went out the night before

yet another would be . . . they stunk that day. :x

either way, they lost . . .
Sports, and all that implies.
