There will be some fall out with the transition - there will be a bunch of recruits this year to make up for that. Plus these type of players (good ones) sometimes dont make it at school - so I think Jones has learned to stock up and plan for some attrition.

Can someone give me a brief primer on greyshirts?

High school student does not enroll full time during the Fall of his Freshman year. He is not on scholarship. He does not practice but he can get into the weight program.

The student goes on scholarship and becomes a full-time student in the Spring. He gets to go through Spring Practice. His eligibility clock starts.

The following Fall the student has been in the weight program for a year, been through practices and workouts with his teammates in the spring and summer...but the NCAA considers him a "true" freshman so he still has his redshirt year.

The NCAA lets the team count the greyshirt scholarship for either year--so, this year's greyshirts will count towards the 2008 or 2009 recruiting cap. With Hawaii greyshirting so many players, UH fans have gotten used to the process! It is a nice and legal thing (the NCAA specically states this is fine) to do when you have too many recruits wanting to play for you!

The funny thing is when a player greyshirts and then redshirts. By the time he plays as a freshman, he's in his 3rd year in the program!

Some people take 5 1/2 years to finish undergrad, even without a greyshirt!
