Rice used have a bar on its campus in the basement of the Chemistry Building. The bar's name was Valhalla. It was a fantastic place. It may still be there; I don't know.

We would drive over there to have a few brews.

While I have no real objection to a bar on campus, I don't think it's the drinking and driving that's the real issue here. It's the excessive drinking.

I've had my fair share, and except for some divine intervention, I should probably have spent some time in jail or I should be dead.

I'm not against drinking.

But I'd rather the university come up with something else besides a bar on campus to try to solve the problem of kids getting in trouble with alcohol. And I'd like the kids recognize the solution themselves. Life's too short to not learn from the tragedies of others.

I say put the bar in Ford Stadium and only open it before, during, and after games.

The bar isn't going to do much unless they have a "no ID" and "no campus PD arresting drunk people stumbling back to their dorm" policy. If it isn't the most inviting place to go people will just go elsewhere.

I was always told the reason SMU never had an oncampus bar was either the methodist church or the city. If they can get a bar put in they can sell booze at Ford.

I think they did not want to mess with the city since it is dry and is a hassle to get students to sign up for the Unicard. But at fraternity parties you can hire a private bartender to get around that.

Most important question - if they build an on-campus bar, will it be open to alums to come drink and oogle 21 year old chicks?

having a bar won't solve the issues, plus you know the SMU PD will make a hassle to get in, and leave without getting in trouble. i do like the frats having parties and hiring bartenders.

I always thought the university should offer a responsible drinking class, like the Univ. of Washington has. Students learn how to monitor BAL, how much they can drink an hour to remain under .08 blood alcohol, what happens physiologically when a person drinks too much, warns coeds about the hazards of drinking too much (e.g., date rape), etc. It was a popular class and, believe it or not, really effective.
