For the Love of God -- sign a point guard!!

Postby George S. Patton » Sat Feb 02, 2008 10:15 pm

It's games against the road contest at Tulsa that shows you how glaring this is. It just kills your team.

We need a JUCO PG in the worst possible way. Its glaring and embarrassing
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.”- Jalen Jones

this is one big reason why I don't even think we have really started our rebuild yet and why i have found this year so discouraging. Doh is in year 3 next season and we have no point guard on the radar, and few schollies left to give.

I thought you had a man-crush on Mike Walker? Don't get me wrong, I agree with you that we need some PGs, but just thought you loved MW.

remember when Dement brought in Stephen Woods from the get go, made him the leader and you could see the future? We don't have anything close to a Stephen Woods right now. And its not like that was even the glory days or anything.

No doubt, I do. I just thought he would have progressed more to this point.

It would be nice to see a PG penetrate the paint and dish to someone flashing along the baseline. Have we even seen that this year. Maybe TCU. Oh, and they lost to Air Force too -- at home.

MW is going to be awesome, but he's young. Some upperclass help at this position is needed.

We have done this a lot. So far the dish off is to the other team.

We’ll see just how bad our guard situation is when we play Memphis. Rose and Douglas-Roberts are unbelievably good - they are athletic, quick, talented, and they will D you up. They will expose our guards for exactly what we can’t do – take care of the ball, make good passes and create shots for others. It will be ugly

Yeah, they brought those guys to Moody last year, right? Pretty close game as I recall.

Romo was supposed to take out Eli too.

Derrick Rose didn't play last year - Memphis didn't really have a true point like him last year either.

Will be interested to see how Doh tries to match up with DR's quickness. I would imagine we will play a lot of zone - hope we can contain him, but haven't really seen him contained yet this year. Amazing what a real point guard can do for a team.

As D mentioned, Derrick Rose, the best freshman guard in the country IMO, didn't play last year. If you don't believe us, here is his profile on nbadraft.net, who have him going 2nd in the next NBA draft.......

NBA Comparison: Dwyane Wade/Jason Kidd
Strengths: "A breath taking athlete with terrific size for the point guard position at 6-4 ... His upside is truly special … An absolutely dazzling dunker with blinding speed ... Likely to be the most athletic PG in the league for years to come … A point guard in the truest sense of the word. His development in this area has been phenomenal in the past 2 years (which is apparent when you read his profile from a year and a half ago) … Knows how to run a team, and raises the level of play of his teammates … A pass-first point guard with excellent court vision … Has a rare ability to create passing lanes – finding and creating shots for teammates who do not appear to be open … A relentless defender with quick hands and length. Gets low and will lock his man down on defense and should only improve. Gives the same intensity and effort on both ends of the floor … Excellent handle on the ball, with a deadly crossover, very tough to contain one on one … A constant threat to blow by his man off the dribble … Rarely shows much emotion, very calm on and off-court demeanor, does not get rattled easily … Plays with a high level of intensity remaining level-headed … Deadly on the fast break with his passing ability and athleticism … Powerful leaper. Can get his head at rim level and has the strength to go into traffic and dunk on people … Catlike quickness and body control … Excellent finisher around the basket even after contact… Clutch player who raises his level of play against good competition and wants the ball in crunch time … Hits his foul shots at a good rate … Very team-oriented with a great attitude. Willing to learn, very coachable and still improving … Accustomed to the 'family feeling' with his teams (he is very close with his high school teammates, and his AAU team, coached by his brother, consisting mostly of his high school teammates). Has a close knit group surrounding him and protecting his future … Tough as nails competitor. A warrior who leaves it out on the floor every time out … A true floor general who shows a solid understanding of the game. Good decision maker. … Has very long arms and strong hands … Loves to drive and hang in the air and shoot when he’s cleared the defense … Very crafty at making shots around the basket, especially fadeways getting great height on his jumpers … Excellent rebounder due to his size, strength and tenacity …"

So, I think he might make a difference.

Few? try zero. Or actually, we have negative one. Who get's kicked off the team in order to keep Mohammed Faye?

My understanding is that they are pursuing a jc point guard from west texas very hard. Just not sure who's scholarship he's going to get.

(That's not true, it's somewhat painfully obvious who isnt in Doherty's plans for the future, I was just saying that because I like being sarcastic.)

No, not right. and the players SMU brought to Moody that night are all gone now. The only Mustang who scored a basket in that close game with Memphis, and is still around, is John Killen. Ike, Devon, Rack and Dez put up all the rest of our points that night.
