We would drive over there to have a few brews.

While I have no real objection to a bar on campus, I don't think it's the drinking and driving that's the real issue here. It's the excessive drinking.

I've had my fair share, and except for some divine intervention, I should probably have spent some time in jail or I should be dead.

I'm not against drinking.

But I'd rather the university come up with something else besides a bar on campus to try to solve the problem of kids getting in trouble with alcohol. And I'd like the kids recognize the solution themselves. Life's too short to not learn from the tragedies of others.

A lot of my friends in Houston are Rice alums and I try to make it down there every year for their annual Alumni Beer Bike race. Good times...Valhalla is still there and it's the pub for grad students. And Rice has a pub for undergrads called Willies but the students just call it "pub."
Anyway, one thing I noticed about Rice's pubs is that they only serve beer. And believe it or not, it's a good way to foster on-campus camaraderie.

Another feature of Rice campus life that promotes student body camaraderie is that there is no Greek system. Students belong to colleges where they live eat and study. The colleges are staffed with faculty and grad student advisors. Students belong to their college their entire undergrad career.

Students learn how to monitor BAL, how much they can drink an hour to remain under .08 blood alcohol, what happens physiologically when a person drinks too much, warns coeds about the hazards of drinking too much (e.g., date rape), etc. It was a popular class and, believe it or not, really effective.

Wash U. also has a bar on campus, but that might be because of all the money they get from Anheiser Bush & Co.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

George Washington U has a bar on campus (as well as many around the corner from campus). I took the DC Bar exam in the GWU campus rathskeller. So, I took the Bar in a Bar. Unfortunately, they weren't serving booze during the exam.

Not a chance will happen.
Laura Lee Blanton (God rest her soul) and Ruth Althschuler would veto this straight out of the gate.

I don't particularly think having a bar on campus is a big deal, but for the purpose of trying to reducing alcohol and DD related deaths? First of all, how many of these kids were of age and died from alcohol? Yea, that's right. None. Second of all, how many of the kids that died from alcohol, died from drunk driving? None. The logic is fallacious.

Beyond that, it is as if SMU is passively condoning the use of alcohol. If they operate the bar/pub as to where they won't serve you to drunkenness, then the kids will still end up going to plucker's et al to get schnockered. Absolutely ridiculous.

I'm not against the bar, but that is a great point.

Any on-campus bar will be poorly planned and poorly executed.

Great point. Especially 'where they won't serve you to drunkenness". You know if they had a bar, they would have SMU PD watching at all times and the bartenders would be cutting off kids left and right, which would lead kids to go to Milos, Barley House, some uptown bar and just get trashed there.

I think the words "colleges" and "cults" could be interchangable here - there are some weird night birds on that campus.

their pub idea is wack along with the other 22 ideas...if they really want this drug task force to work...they suspend frats on campus for 3 threes and the campus will be clean for atleast 2 years after they are reinstated.
