The gist is that Kevin Hart, an OL from Nevada called a press conference, announced his decision to attend Cal. Problem is that no one from Cal has ever had a conversation with this kid.
Apparently the police are getting involved to see if someone was impersonating Jeff Tedford.
Kevin Hart was also supposedly hearing from Oregon, Washington and Illinois and recently A&M. Never took any official visits, but I guess thought he had a verbal offer.

Hmmm...
Starting to sound like this kid had no offers at all. No official visits. Not highly rated on rivals. 5.2 Two Star in rivals.
Is it possible this kid made it all up?

Maybe Mike Owens is his agent.

I would have to say I am leaning that way based on reading more articles about this on the Cal site

I can also see a kid from a really small town that would not know any better. Would any of us know how this recruiting game worked if we came from a school that didn't regularly see kids go to the college level? Would the coach be able to help? Is this kid from a poor backgroud that would not have any resources? I prefer to give kids the benefit of the doubt until proven otherwise. The world is to negative as it is...

That is a sad story . . . I almost hope for it being someone playing a prank on him rather than the kid making it all up himself, that would bring forth a much more deep seeded issue...
Sports, and all that implies.

If it is a prank, what kind of penalties could there be for the perpetrators?

Odd. Isn't the sadder story if some people were so cruel that they played with a kid's dreams like that? If the kid was just spinning lies and they got out of hand, the kid would never live it down and he would be horribly embarassed, but it wouldn't be cruel.

If he hasn't been on a recruiting trip to any school, how would he know which one to pick? If it comes out that this was a prank played on him, then yeah, that is really cruel. But to be so ignorant as to not have met with the coach face-to-face, and to not have taken any trips to the school makes me wonder if the kid just isn't very bright.

The story made me laugh. No visit to the school, no face to face meeting with any of the coaches, and you call a press conference to announce a decision to go to the school.....hhhhhhmmmmm.

I was going more towards the possibility of it all being in his head, like a social disorder, dimensia, psycho and that maybe he just took it all way, way too far with a press conference and such . . . to echo "me" it is sad either way...

I know what you are saying, SMUshouldbebowling. That is kind of what I suspect, too. I guess I prefer that to the kid being pranked.

Reminds me of this guy I know who used to go to SMU. I get the feeling this kid was reading "Pippi Longstockings."

Good old-fashioned small-town ass-whippin' would be my guess.
And recommendation.
