Just let him keep talking. He'll eventually hang himself. And have no one to blame but himself.

First, Henson is an instructor, not a prof...even though the terms seem interchangeable, they are not. Most faculty would probably not go in such a public forum as the school newspaper to question the integrity or wisdom of recruiting a student like Odiari-Mr Henson chose this forum for visibility and to tweak the noses of folks that have more influence/proportional power/authority than himself. Responding to the DC in like is to draw attention to this pitiable man by validating his opinion. This would only give him the attention he desires, and a position as the voice of anti-athlete prophet crying in the wilderness.
Apply your size 13 shoe firmly on top of Mr Henson's head by going above him to his supervisor, and registering your displeasure (at his attack on a student) as an alumni and a supporter of this University. There will no doubt be more attention given to Mr Henson, but not in the public forum that he desires. Apart from the cries of First Ammendment rights, the only argument that Henson will have about presenting the past legal history of a new student to the campus will be a desire to inform others of the inequities of SMU promoting football over Spanish, and the depths that Coach Jones has already brought our program by associating our beloved school with such a ruffian.
Mr Henson is a pitiable man...he wrote his piece to the Daily Campus, for crying out loud-not a wide circulation for his pointed thoughts. It was targeted at a community that has largely dismissed SMU football in the past ( as evidence student/faculty attendance ), and he will eventually fade into the the nether regions himself soon enough. His name will be remembered no more.

This is far more serious than my joking around. The more I consider what this teacher has done, the more upset I have become. First, he doesn't understand the space that should exist between a teacher or professor and the student. This "space" should a safe zone, where the student shouldn't be attacked personally or a yound coed approached sexually. The professor is a mentor...a teacher and should recognize and respect the power he/she might have over molding the opinions of their students.
Second, for a teacher to call out a student whether or not he had personal knowledge of the situation or not is not acceptable. In this case he did not have any personal knowledge and relied solely on newspaper articles which are always highly suspect.
I am beginning to rant like the OSU football coach, but this teacher has no business at SMU.
This should be emailed (along with others) to George's boss.
I have no problems with this guy not agreeing or going after the athletics program, but I believe he crossed a line here.

Normally, the chances of my reading a story about SMU's new football recruiting class would be nil. But something - the gods? - whispered in my ear and told me to read Thursday's lead article about SMU's 28 new recruits.
I like how he pretends to have no interest in football, yet continually finds the need to write about it in the DC. Something whispered in his ear...maybe it was inner voice..."please someone notice me"
