If you take an objective look at our recruiting class this year Dutch you would know that we recruit very very well, one of the best recruiting classes in FCS football and compared favorably to your recruiting class (two Rival three stars for Texas State, 3 for SMU with the rest being Rivals 2 stars although we do have more unrated players than you do). It also compares favorably to almost every CUSA class with exception of Southern Miss and is better than some (Rice). Now of course you can't judge a recruiting class until you see how these players develop but on paper right now that's how it looks.
You will be very surprised how much maroon and gold will be in your stadium September 6th. Texas State travels better than any school in our conference and better than some 1-A schools to big games.
With that said it is my opinion that if UTSA wasn't working to create a 1-A program Texas State wouldn't be taking this vote and looking to move up. If UTSA were successful that would leave Texas State sandwiched between two 1-A programs, including one of the biggest in the country 30 miles up the road, and that would have severely hurt the Texas State program.
As far as the question of what do we do, just say we are moving up and that's it, no it's more complicated than that. The NCAA at this point as a moratorium for the next three seasons (it was four seasons but one has already passed) on anyone moving divisions. The Texas State plan is a five year arrangement and includes raising the student athletic fee, which is currently being voted on, increasing private donations, which is happening as well with a one million dollar donation pending from an alum, and starting construction on new facilities and expanding existing facilities. Construction on a new Baseball/Softball complex should start in June, Bobcat Stadium will be expanded initially from 15,700 to 25,000 with new skyboxes. A second expansion will bring it up to 33,000. A new soccer/track stadium will be built as well over time and long range plans call for the expansion of Strahan Colleseum from 7,600 to over 10k. All of that is to show the NCAA and other conferences (including CUSA) that the university is serious about spending the kind of money it takes to be competitive in all sports right away. Also part of the five year plan are specific goals as far as winning in all sports. Currently all women's sports at Texas State are competitive for a conference championship every year, Volleyball has made the NCAA tournament 3 or the past 5 years, Basketball currently leads the conference and softball is strong as well. The strongest men's sport is Baseball, last year Texas State was competitive against Texas, A&M and Baylor and beat Rice, Oklahoma and Notre Dame to name a few. Basketball is on the way back as you might have seen at your holiday tournament but it isn't there yet. We have had back to back strong recruiting classes and that turn around will continue. The next two seasons are critical for football. The plan calls for the team to be in the hunt for a conference championship every year and be a FCS playoff team by next season. Considering we have only made the FCS playoffs once that is a tall order but it's something that has to happen if we are going to show another conference that we can be competitive right from the start. That is also what is needed to sell out every game at home and show another conference that we have the fan support that would benefit them if Texas State were a member.
Sorry for the book. I am very proud of where our athletic program is heading. There are many of us who have wanted this for a long long time and are excited that the day is finally here.

I really want to like Tx State...or at least empathize with them. But I'm having a hard time doing so. Their coach when they won a nat'l title wound up going on to coach the Frogs (even though he was a good guy...coached the Frogs). Now they're going to be conference mates with NTSU (most likely) and start cutting into the same pie of non-BCS D1 players we are after. Not to mention, the Ark St fans were so amicable last year, there's just not much room left for being the "good guys" of the Sun Belt.

Now watch...we're going to get bombarded with George Strait and LBJ and trips down the Guadalupe and everything else that's pro-SWTSU.
