Time to schedule a big time football team once a year!

Post by hawaiisashimi_smu »

SMU needs to schedule a top 20 team once a year. JJ used to schedule teams like U$C, Wisconsin, Alabama, Michigan State, and won a bunch at home. Time to up the schedule. Either a home game or on the road.

Its always fun to make the big boys squirm. 8)

We're getting close to that. We have played Texas Tech every year for the last 6 years (they have been ranked quite a bit in the top 25), and we have a home & home series coming up in the next 4 seasons with both Missouri and Texas A&M.

We need to schedule games with top level teams. Why not renew our old rivalries with teams like Ohio State and Notre Dame? They would not travel to Dallas but the national publicity would make it worth always playing at their stadiums.

GO PONIES!!!!

baby steps. Tech & TCU are in and out of the top 25 every year and in the last 4 years we are 1-6 against them. Start poaching off them first and then we'll worry about a top 10 team.

After all the upsets last year, top programs aren't going to be as willing to play an underdog. if you're going to get an "L" might as well be against a better team for SOS.

it can be financially beneficial to schedule them out a few years and bet on the come that you'll be better. Hawaii made somewhere in the ballpark of $300,000 this year when Michigan bought them out of their scheduled game for week 1. wonder if UM wants a redo on that one.
Ok this is getting ridiculous...I agree with Dutch on THIS ONE POST by him totally

It was $250k from Michigan State. Michigan chose to play Appalachian State instead of Hawaii, but they never had a contract with UH so they never paid UH any money.

Jones got away with that, because back in the day, playing in Hawaii meant that schools could add a 12th game. In essence the Hawaii trip was a bonus. So for us to play those schools would mean a body bag game on the road. No way will any of those schools agree to play us a home and home in Dallas, unless they want to do so for recruiting reasons. We might get Iowa State, Kansas, KSU, Missouri, Colorado to visit us. Maybe even a Pac 10 school other than USC or UCLA. We might get a home and home with Indiana, Minnesota or Northwestern from the Big Ten, but no way would we get Michigan, Iowa, Penn State, Wisconsin, or Ohio State. Some SEC schools would visit us maybe Vandy, Arkansas, Miss State or Ole Miss. But not GA, FLA, LSU, Bama or Auburn. Perhaps a UVA, Wake or Duke from the ACC would visit us, but not FSU, Miami. VT might agree to a home and home because they like playing CUSA teams. They've played Marshall and ECU.

We need to get more than 1 W in a season before we start screwing with our scheduling. We have a lot of potential, but we still haven't proven a single thing on the field. I love the winning attitude, but if it doesn't translate into success on the field against our current competitiion, why should we schedule even higher ranked teams?

One step at a time, guys.

That is a very good thing to point out. Teams get to play an extra game if they play a game in Hawaii due to the special exception the NCAA gives Hawaii. That really helped when a team wanted an extra game.

For example, Alabama went on probation and could not play in a bowl game for a couple of years. So, they added Hawaii to their schedule as their final game...in essence, that was their Bowl game.

Formula for scheduling OOC games:

1 "Easy Game" against a low level team that we SHOULD beat
1 "Upper Level Game" against a tough team with good national recognition such as Texas Tech, Texas A&M, etc.
1 "Similar Schools" game against Baylor, Vanderbilt, Duke, at this point Notre Dame, etc.
and the TCU game.

the problem with playing ND is that they already have a Texas destination in 09 in San Antonio. but it would be great to play them in the new stadium

Were Ohio St and Notre Dame ever really "rivals"?

am i the only one who doesnt like the idea of us playing bigger teams? we arent hawaii or anywhere near that good. i would like to schedule an easy team so we can get to 6 wins. i would rather go to a bowl game at the end of the year than to be able to say "well, we played Texas. we lost 55-0, but we played them"
