I think they were still tossing that idea around in 1994. So much for that gem.

Don't be too sure about that. I hear the North Texas State folks are gearing up for a bunch of chili suppers, car washes, and candy bar sales...... ![]()
Don't forget mums for homecoming too!
I am looking forward to the spaghetti dinners and bake sales, but don't eat the brownies ![]() Just send 'da money.
Explain to me why facilities unique to the band is necessary. I don't know why a hall in any one of our buildings couldn't be used. SMU seems to have a large no. of underutilized facilites. Why would Meadows be so objectionable? Could we use the concourse of Ford and and add secure rooms or whatever? Who does the band report to today? The athletic department?
It would seem like spending $5-10MM for a special "Band" building would be a difficult sell. Could someone that was in the band help me understand? I understand traveling money, scholarships, etc. but the problem with facilities is something I don't. Thanks.
The main reason is that the Natorium basement has never really been big enough...even for a band of our size, which by the way is getting bigger every year. They need space for instrument and uniform storage, for office and administration, for the music library and for rehearsals just to name a few. Throw in the fact that the Natorium basement is old, rundown and prone to flooding. Needless to say, it's time for a new location.
There is space earmarked in the new Dedman Center for the Band. They just need the money to finish it out. From what I understand, it'll take a couple hundred thou to do it right. Currently, the Band reports up through Student Affairs. Meadows doesn't want them, at least they didn't when I was there. There was a time that Meadows profs discouraged participation in Mustang Band, though I'm not sure if that attitude is still the norm. Hope that helps...
We already have a space earmarked for us. We simply need just north of $1mil to build out the space (the structure is complete). You obviously don't know what is involved in putting together and organizing a nearly 100 person (hopefully larger in the future) band (no shame in that). That means we have to store more than 100 instruments, more than 100 uniforms (each uniform consisting of more than 10 parts), and numerous other things.
That's on top of having a space large enough to squeeze the group in to rehearse. We do more than march around a couple of times a week. We can't just use storage rooms in Ford. Administering a marching band is much different than a small or large ensemble housed in meadows. I would be hesistant to say they had an acceptable rehearsal space large enough, especially that they would be willing to devote to us several times per week, along with enough storage for all our crap. The new Band hall is located to the Northeast of Ford. We have a loading type area between Dedman and the new tennis stadium, and a locker room type facility for us to utilize during football games. Make no mistake. This is not a "we think it would be neat if.." The Mustang Band needs a legitmate practice facility. Sir, shooting-star, sir.
