Willis had one incident where he punched a guy. At any other school, or if the guy punched had not been gay, Willis probably wouldn't have even been suspended.

What other baggage are you talking about, cowtown?

Haven't posted much lately. There are some other agendas being spelled out here. Here is a kid that was the 3rd string All America freshman. Last yr. he had to try and carry a team with no defense. He did the best he could. I doubt any QB in the country could have done much better. I wish some posters would just state what they mean and get over it. At least people could have a logical discussion. I also think JW has a natural talent and hope he starts.

I'm not talking a single post. I am talking about a number of posts referring to JW and his off field life. OK a 20/21 yr. old kid hit another kid. Happens a million X's per day. If you want to talk about JW's skills on the field OK. If he kills someone then things should get dealt with. No charges were sustained. This kid has brought about more hope to SMU than anyone except JJ. Is this just a Texas thing. NEWS//// SMU is a national school.

No, its not me! Reading all this crap makes me look like the smartest guy in the world. Some of you need to talk to the players more, but I know this is not going to happen. This is a friend/buddy board used for whatever reasons, I do not know, but obviously not to discuss logical football. There is no incoming freshman good enough to take JWills job. There is no QB on the team good enough to take JWills job. Just ask the QB's. Burns offense was to complicated for the backups we had last year, so what do you think JJ's offense is going to do to them? JWill does have a natural talent. It is understanding how to run an offense. Some QB's can run your offense and some QB's your have to create plays for them to run. JJ is impressed and will be impressed with JWill. All the other QB's better hope for a major injury. Not just the head shots he took on that dismill team last year.

I am reading, but only posting now and again. The reading is funny. Logan Turner competing for a starting job? He better hope he is not running the scout team when the incoming freshmen hit school? Logan is not even on the radar. The other kid is a better athlete than both, but not a better QB than JWill. His hips are stiff. He will be one of our better receivers when his career is over.

IMHO, Zach Rhodes could be a good QB, but the learning curve is not long enough so as to give him additional opportunity. His injury during the summer exhibition game before his entering SMU sealed that situation at the outset. That sux, but it is what it is.

Don't know squat about Turner other than his high school career went well; so what? So did Smith's & Mitchell's.

As for Burns' offense, I agree that it was truly too damn complicated. But anybody who has paid attention to the Run/Shoot knows that a stupid QB isn't going to run this offense either. Decision-making, or rather, very, very efficient and disciplined decision-making, is key. If one doesn't have it, teams a lot less talented than UGA can make your O-line and QB look silly.

I think what makes Willis who he is on the field is as much preparation as it is improvisation. Clearly, he knew the plays cold. Yeah, he had some trouble with progressions, and perhaps he took off too quickly. However, he a) had the stamina to keep taking off too quickly, b) had to take off to save his own neck too much, and c) dammit, Rusty either wouldn't or couldn't find somebody to sit in the pressbox and survey the whole field such that plays and audibles could be called in to service Justin's knowledge. Guys, Rusty sucked. I don't know if it was Bennett micro-managing, or Rusty being so bad he needed micro-managing. Doesn't matter. Even handicapping the offense for talent, Willis still wasn't used properly. And you know what? If I were him, I'd be a pretty damn difficult QB to coach as well if my coaches left me hanging out to dry. I mean, C'MON.

If Jones truly gives Justin a fair shake, and Justin buys into the different pass-first/efficient decision nature of the offense, I say the guy puts up numbers that make the last two seasons look patently ridiculous.

And for the record, I think he learned his lesson about keeping his head off the field. I also think he learned that sometimes the people who are entrusted to keep you safe do indeed do that...and sometimes they don't. They are like the weather guy on TV...right most of the time, but don't count on him.

It is what it is.
If he lost his job in spring practice and decided to transfer, he'd still have two years left wherever he ended up, wouldn't he? .
...........NO....Willis was redshirted his true freshman year, so if he transfered to a Div. 1 school, he would only have his senior year to play after having to sit out a year. It would be stupid to transfer unless he wanted to go to a 1AA school.

He wouldn't be the first to do that, but I don't think he is going to even have to comptemplate such a move.
