I used to have a picture of Conrad Dobler with the St. Louis Cardinals smoking a cig on the bench, on the sidelines, during a game. How times have changed.

Many sideline shots of the 40s-50s show coaches smoking. There are some in 40s Rotundas. All players and coaches sat on the bench - or coaches sat in a chair - you rarely see anyone on the sideline standing. Of course players played both ways and not many substitutions. (QB calling the plays, too!) I had a high school coach in the 60s who smoked at football practice all the time - never thought anything about it. I don't think he ever smoked during games, though.

That picture of Dandy Don made me recall this story about the great Max McGee originally from Texas who played for Green Bay; definately Old School behavior from a different era:

"It was January 15, 1967, the day of the first Super Bowl, then called the AFL-NFL World Championship Game. An aging and banged-up McGee knew he wouldn’t get any playing time. Heck, he’d been warming the bench all year, having only caught 4 balls for 91 yards and 1 touchdown all season. So McGee decided to spend the night before the first Super Bowl per usual: partying. He returned from his night on the town just in time for the team breakfast the next morning. McGee and Hornung, who was suffering from a pinched nerve in his neck, were sitting on the bench early in the first quarter making party plans for after the contest when McGee heard Lombardi scream his name. “MAX!â€
