Could that have been New Mexico? I don't know if I'm getting the year right, but I remember a game vs. New Mexico at SMU won by the Ponies. New Mexico had Kenny Thomas and would've been ranked. At the same game, I believe, SMU honored Dave Bliss and some of the former Mustangs were there.

Other possibilities: UNLV or Utah. Utah could've been ranked at the time.

I was thinking Fresno.....but I couldn't remember if that white boy Herron (sp?) kept us from winning. I hated him, but he was fun to watch.

I think that was the year that we beat UNLV 3 times, including in the CUSA Tourney. This may have been the home win vs. UNLV that year.

You must mean the WAC Tourney. That last game in Vegas was a fun one. I remember that one. I believe that Renaldo Bratton won that game on a layup at the buzzer. Did the same thing against UTEP that tourney too. If I remember correctly, that was the one where we took Utah to the buzzer, only to get beat by Keith Van Horn...again.

You are right - that was the WAC tourney - we beat UNLV 3 times - twice on thier court. Chad Elsey hit the game winner from the corner in the WAC Tourney.

However, it was a different yeat that KVH tipped in the winning shot against us and New Mexico the folowing night. That was the year that Utah went to the final Four.

And I believe it was a different year that Bratton beat UTEP and New Mexico.

I loved the Conference Tourney in Vegas - those were good times!

Too bad no-one can seem to convince the CUSA Tourney to come to the great state of Texas (and I am not talking about El Paso . . .) The conference Tournament used to be the greatest week of the year!

I imagine the CUSA tournament will be in Memphis for many years to come.

And Memphis will continue to win the CUSA Tourney for many years to come. I, for one, am rooting for Memphis to lose their first game in the CUSA Tourney so that we can have 2 teams from our conference . . . memphis could use the week off before the NCAA Tourney to work on FT shooting anyway.

just a point of clarification, here's what really happened in the WAC tournament

1997 -- Beat COLO ST in the first round, lost to Utah on the Van Horn play in the Quarters. Stellar defense by Poerner by the way.

1998 -- Beat COLO ST in the first round, lost a squeaker to the TCU in the Quarters.

1999 -- Beat UTEP in the first round on a last minute flurry, Beat #1 Seed UNLV (for the third time that season) in the Quarters. I believe the Elsey shot was in the regular season game at UNLV. We lost to New Mexico in the Semis.

Didn't Bratton also beat New Mexico by driving the length of the floor one year as well?

Viva Las Vegas!

Further clarification: Utah went to the Final Four in 1998, the year AFTER Keith Van Horn left. They still had Andre Miller, among other talented players.
