Different situation. That was an instance of a school not offering a graduate program and he got a waiver. It was, in that instance necessary to get an NCAA waiver. Similar to what Serge Elize was able to do with our FB team. Again, this was not the scenario that Blog laid out. I was trying to address his specific question with the best of my limited knowledge.

Dez had graduated and is pursuing a graduate degree; I think the degree has something to do with education, which adds credence to the possibility that he has to go to a school that offers a graduate degree the other school does not have.

I am not saying this kid is great, but he has starter's experience in a passing offense and is more of a pure passer than Willis.

We have to consider the possibility that Willis won't get the offense.

Why not SMU as a backup plan for Willis?

He is terrible. I am a big Tech fan and watched him play quite a bit.

Hey, by the way, Rocky: Did Gailey go to the pros as you said he wanted to? (Don't know, I'm asking.)

Mrydel,

Rhett Bomar transferred from OU to Sam Houston State which is a lower division school I believe and had to sit out a year. Also, I know the rule you are talking about and the NCAA did rescind the rule. But in any case, you are allowed to file for a waiver whether they are a senior or not. The NCAA might not grant it but it can be requested. Arkansas is asking for a waiver for Ryan Mallet, they might not get it but they are asking. TSU got the waiver for Reid as you can see in the article. But it sounds like the young man may not be as good as Willis anyway, so they will probably not pursue him.

Cincinnati's starting QB transferred from Wake and didn't have to sit out, I believe.

If I am not mistaken, Bomar had to sit out because he was a cheater not because of the Div to which he transferred. If you transfer down you do not need a waiver, or if by some unknown rule you do, it is always rubber stamped as okay. Kids do it all the time. That is why I crusade for a change to allow immediate playing time for BCS transfers to mid major D1A schools. It would help level the BCS/midmajor playing field.

I don't think Bomar sat out because of cheating, but
I may be wrong and you may be right. In any case, I totally agree with you regarding transfers being able to play immediately. It would level the playing field and give kids more opportunities. Good point.

I don't think his case had been reviewed by the NCAA in time for him so he went down a notch so it would not matter.

My memory is just too bad. There was someting that kept him from playing right away I thought. Or was it that he arrived late and he did actually play after the first few games and got injured? MM1965 should know what went on with him.

The rule was done away with, however a few weeks ago a QB from U of Miami(forget his name, but went to HS in Texas) was able to transfer to Baylor and will be eligible to play for the Bears this year. He was attending grad school at Baylor no matter whether he got the extra year or not.

His name is Kirby Freeman. Kirby graduated from UM and was essentially cut from the football team, so he petitioned the NCAA to allow him to transfer as a graduate student and play right away.

As stated, the rule that used to allow graduates to transfer without sitting out has been changed following lots of manipulation. Like all other D1 to D1 transfers, graduates must petition now.
