I swear Bennett would get a good look at the formation and personel and would literally scream "It's a draw" or "Watch the boot"... then the linebackers would cheat and the play would be exactly what Phil yelled, over and over and over.

Identifying plays is of ZERO value if you can't coach your team on how to stop them. You might be another PB lover, but he is gone now and it's time to stop singing his praise. There is little to be proud of over the past 5 years.

Calling out who? I called out noone. I have nothing but respect for every single teammate I had at SMU, but the fact of the matter is that some people just can't hack it on special teams for one reason or another. We had like 9 or 10 games, out of 12, last year with a penalty on our kickoff return team. I'm not spitting opinions, I'm spitting facts. I think that we legitimately had one block in the past 5 years due to the punter being too slow -- the rest were all people getting out-classed and getting run over or blocking the wrong guy somehow.


Sorry if I hurt your feelings, but unfortunately there are some people in the world, like me, who will tell you the truth. You know nothing of Coach Bennett's dedication to special teams and you know zero about his coaching beyond watching him from the stands. I spent 1300 days of my life watching him coach and sitting in his meetings and you are flat out wrong. Don't like it? It's simple, don't be wrong and don't talk out of your [deleted]. Certainly don't whine to me about it, like I care if you think I was wrong to call you an idiot -- if I felt bad, I would've edited my post.


Since I will forever be a fan of Bennett, I'll just let you guys know one thing...

Let me preface with the fact that I certainly agree that the all-in thing was SO stupid. Wow. The swinging gate was also ridiculous... We also had lots of punt fakes that were SO ridiculously bad.

We just never made the plays. I'm telling you, some games Bennett was like Miss Cleo with a stache. He will have Pitt's D in the top 10 in no time because they have some beasts on defense who will CRUSH offenses when Bennett's sitting over there yelling what the offense is going to run. I think the Big East offenses would be smart to start audibling after they line up and hear what Phil yells, haha.

Say what you want about the man, but he sure looked like a psychic from the sidelines when we weren't screaming ALL IN ALL IN.

The ability to call exactly how his defense would be smoked while maintaining a false aura of class? This man had everything!

It'll be fun to watch this year, that's for sure. I'm still not convinced a DC from one of the worst defenses in America shows up to be our LB coach and we bring in someone from Fresno State to be our DC. Quit acting like the difference in defense this year will be light and day, because it won't. It might just be a little less dark at best.

Since you are so into facts, then I will remind you that I used your words, "...no special teams coordinator or a solid special teams plan...". I presume you treat your own sentiment as fact. If I come up with a different conclusion than you do, well, I guess you will just have to get all twitter-pated and tell me how wrong I am.

As a side note, you shouldn't presume to know whether I am familiar with Coach Bennett's dedication. His dedication is why he got the benefit of the doubt from me for the last two years. I wanted the guy to succeed. It is what it is, but don't mistake criticism for taking a shot at his character. They aren't the same.

As for calling me an idiot, well, I never said boo about it in my post. Nevertheless, I have been called much worse by much better people who disagreed with me on more important matters. I think I'm fine with it.

p.s. Morstead is indeed a great player, and I believe he is the reason that the '06 season went as well as it did. It helps when you pin the opposing team back behind the 15 yard line. I don't have to be a former player to see that.

Thanks for your opinion regarding Coach Bennett. I was extremely sorry it didn't workout at SMU, we all had high expectations, that never materialized. I am glad to know that his players respected him and that he is a great defensive coach--he is also a great person. I am also glad JJ is here and that Phil landed well.

For a school like SMU, a great defensive minded head coach was never the answer. We would never generate excitement winning or losing 9 to 3, or whatever. Putting 5 or 6 touchdowns on the board will attract the fans and eventually the playmakers.

That really speaks volumes of our defense last year if we KNEW what was coming and still couldn't stop it.

I just wonder how PB could get those players at K-State and Oklahoma to play if he was such a bad coach? Could it be the scheme was to complicated for the younger players and the level of talent on the field?

His scheme depends on the speed of the linebackers and the strength of the corners.


We had speedy, undersized linebackers which can only succeed with a great D-Line (so it's no wonder we had a great run defense the year before last with rogers, muse, haywood and bonds)


His defensive schemes have worked in the past, and quite well. He also sat there like I said before and Miss Cleo'd the heck out of the other teams plays.


Who knows what happened... Oh well.

Interesting thread. I for one am glad to hear that Moorestead is coming back this year. The last time I talked to him he had mentioned going pro. Anyway, good luck to Coach Bennett, for those of us on the board that are "recent" former players and not one of the golden boys. I think we can appreciate the fact that is he was a good coach but its hard to make a Swan out of an ugly duckling. Myself included.
