UAB head coach Mike Davis on SMU

Postby PonyPride » Sat Feb 23, 2008 10:26 pm

"They (SMU) have a lot of young guys with talent, and I like some of the guys they have coming in next year. I'm glad they're coming to our place next year, instead of us coming back in here, because that (SMU) team is going to get better - a lot better."

Good stuff. Davis is a good coach and I hope his assessment is right on our team.

For some perspective on Doh and SMU basketball I think we should look at what Scott Drew is now doing at BU. He is in his 5th year at BU and this is merely their first winning season. Not only are they winning, but have a chance at wrapping up a tournament bid. This is indicative of what Coach Doh was referring to when he said year 6. Baylor fans should expect an NCAA bid next season. If all goes well on the hilltop we should be contending for an NCAA bid in the 2010/11 season and definitely in by 2011/2012

2003–2004 Baylor 8-21 3-13 11th
2004–2005 Baylor 9-19 1-15 12th
2005–2006 Baylor 4-13 4-12 12th
2006–2007 Baylor 15-16 4-12 11th
2007–2008 Baylor 18-9 6-6
Baylor: 50-78 14-58

but they play in the Big 12, not a severely watered down CUSA like we do. And more importantly, Drew came in after one of, if not the biggest scandal in college bball history. Of course we couldnt expect too much too soon, but you also have to see real signs of something that gets people excited for the future. Especially in a 7 man freshmen class. you gotta see it. I guess the thing is, some people see it right now, and some people don't. but i don't think anyone can say there is a local buzz surrounding this freshman class. The DMN has not even written a fluff piece on this bunch yet. And as for last night, Killen and Bamba were practically our whole offense. Dia chipped in 9, but didnt have a good night. Where was everybody else? Malone, Walker and Harp, eh, they were just out there for the most part. Davis said some nice things, he's friendly with Doh from the old Big10/ACC challenge days. Plus they can emphathize with one another about falling from pinnacle programs like UNC and IU. Don't confuse empathy for Davis being real worried about SMU next year.

I was completely unaware that SMU was on probation that included a loss of scholarships, loss of on campus recruiting visits, loss of contact days, loss of evaluation days, loss of all non-conference games for one season ( why did you think Baylor only played 17 games in 2005-2006?) loss of exhibition games for the following year, and a loss of revenue share due to a ban from their conference tournament. All this following one of the most horrific scandals in college basketball history that included, but was not limited to, the murder of a player by a teammate, after which the coach was fired and all current and incoming players on the Baylor roster were allowed to transfer without the standard one year of sitting out.

I was also unaware that SMU played in the Big 12.

That's the comparison you're making, when you use Scott Drew as your baseline. Perhaps I am alone in my thinking, but I dont see where the 2 situations are even remotely similar. SMU played Baylor in Drew's 2nd year as coach, and won 77-43. In other words, we were a long step ahead of where they fell to.

Try recruiting kids to a team where one player just murdered a teammate.

Perhaps I sound a bit harsh here, and I apologize because that wasnt my intention, but Baylor went through something that no other team can really compare to, and they play a much tougher schedule than SMU does, so I dont think this is a valid comparison.

My intention was to show that it doesn't happen overnight. I know that we did not have a scandal, but we had 2 seasons of practically no recruiting- aside from Spencer and Fall. I also realize the difference in the two conferences, I just don't think you can expect immediate impact out of this freshman class.

At the same time I can't say I blame XTC or Hoopfan for your attitudes because you are much closer to the program than I am and it is much easier to become disenchanted that way.

Well when you put it that way...

Yeah, Baylor absolutely went through things very few other teams have ever gone through. Although, probably not to this degree; stabbing a punter in the leg is no where near murder.

Baylor pretty much got the living death penalty. The fact that they came back as strong as they did is a testament to Coach Drew.
