Josh just threw game winning touchdown!Just saw on CBS Sports NFL Sunday Wrapup that former SMU Quarterback Josh McCown rallied the Arizona Cardinals in an amazing comeback and threw the game-winning touchdown with no time on the clock to eliminate the Minnesota Vikings from the Playoffs today!
Wow....Stallion and Cavan thought Josh sucked.....but I guess we now know the problem wasn't Josh, the problem was Stallion's boy Mike Cavan! Oh and by the way....NFL QB Josh McCown has passer rating of 90.0+ in two of past three games! [ 12-28-2003, 03:27 PM: Message edited by: VarsityShop ]
Re: Josh just threw game winning touchdown!Varsity Shop: SMU record post-Cavan, 3-21. Nuff said!
Re: Josh just threw game winning touchdown! No he was still the same bumbling, fumbling QB who can't read a defense-just got lucky. McCown for the second week in a row was sacked 8 times and on 4 of those sacks he fumbled just as he always does and somehow Arizona fell on all 4 of McCown fumbles. He also had an interception on a to a defensive lineman when he was rushed. Had another interception called back because of a penalty. I'll admit it was a Once In a Lifetime Game-How many times to you get to see a QB turn the ball over 6 times.

Re: Josh just threw game winning touchdown! That's insane - you're blaming him for getting sacked so many times? I didn't see the game, but I did see the highlights, and he made a lot of plays, a lot of NFL-caliber plays. He escaped some pass rushers, and threw several strong passes, including that last-second TD, which was a thing of beauty.

Re: Josh just threw game winning touchdown!Q you are wasting your breath.....Stallion blames the QB for sacks!.....LOL.....
Hey thats a new one, maybe on draft day NFL coaches shouldn't try to upgrade their offensive line if their QB is getting sacked alot. Of course Stallion blames Josh for the sacks when Josh was missing three of his offensive line starters in Leonard Davis (flu), Pete Kendall (shoulder), and LJ Shelton (ankle). Stallion is still pissed that Josh had the good sense to do exactly what SMU did (say goodbye to Cavan), only Josh had enough sense to do it earlier! :thumbupcool: Q Q
Re: Josh just threw game winning touchdown!re: Varsity Shop: SMU record post-Cavan, 3-21. Nuff said!
Hey Mickey who recruited the majority of the players that played in those games that SMU went 3-21? ANY QUESTIONS MICKEY?
Re: Josh just threw game winning touchdown! So you're telling me Cavan's failure to recruit blue chips is why Bennett's 3-21? Cavan may have missed out on some recruits but the current coach isn't exactly lighting it up, either.
Re: Josh just threw game winning touchdown!that's funny I distinctly remember about 85% on this board stating that Cavan had quality talent but couldn't coach fundamentals, discipline or motivate the boys.

Re: Josh just threw game winning touchdown! You don't know what you are talking about - you are just looking for an excuse to stir up Stallion. I saw the game the Cards took advantage of pi$$ poor Vikings special teams on a kickoff... and then a pass interference call on a marginally catchable pass carried them down the field. Of course - had his highness Emmitt not seen seen to stopping his route on the previous conversion attempt (or did the great Josh throw behind him... ?) - in any case, a field goal was not an option SO - Josh "smartly" takes ANOTHER sack (and yes "sports fans" - a QB CAN be responsible for a sack - by not throwing the ball away) then josh shows some mobilty and chunks a prayer into double coverage - and Nathan Poole (a former Marshall player) pulls a Randy Moss and snags that think out of the air and now you foo's come running your mouths - talkin' all this jibbs jabba about Cavan and Stallion and you probably didn't even SEE THE GAME! all Josh ever did at SMU was fumble and throw interceptions - and spare me the "well thats all that is happening now" jibba jabba. I KNOW THAT is all that is happening now - he sucked here (maybe it was him, the coach, the system - or all three - but he was not good as a mustang.... let it rest!!!) First name \"Mister\"
Middle name \"Period\" Last name.... \"T\"

Re: Josh just threw game winning touchdown!Stallion: "that's funny I distinctly remember about 85% on this board stating that Cavan had quality talent but couldn't coach fundamentals, discipline or motivate the boys"
I agree with that statement, Stallion. But let me ask something first. What is this a vote? Who cares if 85% or 1% said it? It's not more or less true depending upon who's on the bandwagon or not is it? Now to your argument. Cavan had those two excellent recruiting classes in '97 and '98. I won't speak much to whether two nice hauls in a row are enough to take you over the top other than to say that I would think that the 2000 season when the '97 and '98 classes were juniors and seniors that we'd have done much better than we did. Man, it sure looked like it was heading that way on 9-01-2000. We beat a Big 12 team in Kansas -- the first game at Ford was motivation enough for that team. But the wheels came off immediately after that one day in heaven not because of a lack of talent but because of poor coaching. We lost nine of the next eleven. You are clearly wrong with your stance on coaching. Despite your statement above, fundamentals, discipline, and motivation matter immensely! Some of these elements can come from within the player. But 99% comes from coaching. Cavan was unable to instill these and therefore failed as a coach. (McCown's a perfect case in point). I’m coming home

Re: Josh just threw game winning touchdown!re: When do we hold Bennettt accountable for an 0-12 season and quit blaming Cavan?
Mickey....it isn't brain surgery. Bennett becomes fully accountable when he is rid of the Cavan players and has his own players. Hello.....earth to Mickey? And I promise you if Bennett fails miserably with his own players like Stallion's boy Cavan did, then Bennett will be held accountable.
Re: Josh just threw game winning touchdown! And I suppose Josh is also the same "bumbling, fumbling" QB that led the nation in passing (albeit at a Div II level).
You know the funny thing is... That if Josh put up those kind of numbers BEFORE coming to SMU, he would be PRECISELY the kind of transfer that Stallion is always clamoring over (after all, a stud DII QB transfer would be even better than a JUCO transfer, right?). Sorry Stallion, I couldn't resist. Flame away. "It's a couple hundred million dollars. I'm not losing sleep over it." -- David Miller
Re: Josh just threw game winning touchdown!A message to VaristyShop: It is people like you that have destroyed our football program. Who hired Cavan? Your overweight buddy, Copeland. Was Mike Cavan on a level playing field with his competition? No. Is he entirely to blame for his inability to recruit players needed to compete at the Division 1-A level? No. Is it Mike Cavan's fault that Josh McCown threw to the other team as much as he threw to his own team? No. But you and your athletic department pals like to place blame on SMU'S misfortunes on a coach. You are wrong and your athletic department pals are wrong. Again, I will state the obvious but apparently many on this board fail to admit that they are failures. The problem does not lie with Xs and Os. It lies with SMU's athletic model. Until it changes, SMU will never consistently put a winner on the field. Reality check: SMU did not win a game this season playing in the WAC. SMU is losing D/FW recruits to schools around the county, including Tulsa, La. Tech, and Kansas. Why? It is blatenly obvious to the high school kids that SMU is still not serious about winning. But hey we do graduate more players than La. Tech so everything is fine and dandy around the athletic department. What a bunch of crap. Oh yea, McCown is a traitor and people that defend him are just as bad...no good jerks.
Re: Josh just threw game winning touchdown!Johnny Rock-
Your priorities are so out of whack it is amazing. You can call me a jerk all you want, but I do defend Josh McCown. He is a great guy who made a smart decision for his future. What a [deleted]...
