Dement Has Shot at Division ChampionshipUNCG is 17-11 and on a 3 game winning streak and play a pretty weak Western Carolina team at home on Monday. I think 2 other teams though need to lose.
You obviously don't know him - he enjoys victory and accepts defeat without excuse. He's a realist, not a complainer, and a terrific coach.
Good luck, Coach D! Rise up, Mustang Nation!
Go SMU!
I wish him luck, too. The schedule is a little jab because he continually referred to it in his coaching luncheons with fans. But that's OK.
You don't coach for 20 + years, only win 300 games, have a won/loss percentage barely above 50% and earn the moniker of 'terrific coach'. UNCG was the conference favorite, have one of the best mid sized forwards in the country and don't come close to their division title. Winning on the road and winning close games is not something that D's teams have ever been noted for. However, he has been noted for taking other coaches left over talent, raising expectations and then floundering until he moves off to some other haven for mediocrity.
I completely disagree. Dement was handcuffed like many other coaches at SMU. Given the lack of facilities, ridiculous recruiting restrictions and the every other year changing of conferences, Dement did a pretty good job. We were always competitive against tougher competition than we face today. His inability to get the Sass and Willie D squad to the tourney was his biggest fault. When he was let go, it was time to move on, but the guy is a good coach and a good recruiter. He simply had very little chance to succeed here.
No doubt. It was time for SMU and Dement to part ways, but the guy is a better coach than most around here will admit.
SMU was not quite "rock bottom" but Dement did improve the program with Sasser/Davis/Ross - but as for UNC-G, he inherited Kyle Hines, a terrific SF playing as a PF. The guy was all conference from the time he arrived at UNC-G and at times has been a one-man team. UNC-G is finishing about where most thought they would. Nobody is going to beat Davidson in the So-Con, but Dement's team at least had that early season win at Ga Tech. More than most So-Con teams have on their resume. They are the #5 seed in the SoCon tourney and earned a 1st round bye but that gets them a date with # 4 seed App St for the right to play Davidson in the semi-finals
