April 5th:
It's the first opportunity for SMU and the Dallas community to see coach Jones' new playing style in action. The game is free and a student marketing internship class is hired to promote, plan and execute the spring Red/Blue game.
Should be fun!

1. Create some kind of contest that will benefit the Greeks for being there
2. Free Beer (you didn't say the idea had to be a realistic one)
3. Concert after the game
4. Fireworks after the game (boring as hell but for some reason every time a baseball team has "fireworks night" it brings people out
5. Go with the JJ theme and give everyone who enters the Red & Blue an entry into a raffle for a trip for two to Hawaii. Give one entry for 'advance booking' (pledge) of attending the scrimmage, and an additional entry for each person brought to the scrimmage. Give additional entries for correct answers to trivia questions shown on the Jumbotron throughout the scrimmage; i.e. 10 minutes in show a question that gets 10 additional entries; 20 minutes in one that nets 35 additional entries, etc.
6. Free Beer
7. Again going with the JJ theme/borrowing from Miss Hawaiin Tropic, have Miss SMU Tropic contest
8. Free Beer

I'm in this class, and our goal is to stir up some excitement and bring people out to the event and with it create excitement and momentum for the next season. We're hoping to get a tailgate/boulevard atmosphere, bring in popular bands, and have sponsored food/prizes/giveaways to attract a larger part of the student body.
I mean, last year a lousy 1000 attended (mostly family/girlfriends of the players). Any thoughts on how to make this bigger?
Alex,
Give stuff away. Tried and true method to get anybody on there. Make it hinge somewhat on being there the whole time. Some form of game/contest at the end of the scrimmage.

Tapping into the Greeks really does seem to be the key to success in getting the student body out. Of course the best way to do that is free beer, so this gets a bit circular from here.

Promote it around the campus. Promote it around HP & UP. Make it family friendly for the people around the campus as well as for the students on campus. Giving something away would be a plus. But finding a way to get the Greeks involved is vital.

1) Advertise - direct to alums (emails w/ follow-up reminders), radio and TV (get free advertisement via interviews on Ticket / TV News). Last year, I knew several people who would have gone but did not know about it. The key might be less in having gifts and gimmicks and more in simply making sure people know. It's hard to get thousands of people to show-up if they don't know about it.
2) Students - Greeks are an obvious target, but be careful not to alienate the other half of the student body (ie. try to get Greeks to wear SMU vs. their letters).

beer, sex and gimmicks all sell
not sure how the university would feel about trying to combine all three at midfield, but I'd fly down to see that

Last year Ohio State (not that they needed to spring excitement about football) had the lacrosse team play before the spring game as a part of a double header...

I am offended at being called 'lousy'. Those 1,000 - many of whom were NOT family or gf's - are 'faithful'!!! mustwhat wrote:Any thoughts on how to make this bigger?

Yeah, should prove interesting. I want to see some BOMBS thrown at this game. None of the 10 yd screen pass stuff.
