CSC will kill the student section at the Memphis Game

Postby Mustangs09 » Mon Mar 03, 2008 6:02 pm

The CSC Event staff and the police will kill the student section right behind the visitor bench! During every game this section gets talked to every minute of the game. As soon as this section yells at the opposing coach or players an event staff guy (the one who looks like bilbo baggins) tells the students to keep it down and thats not allowed. A few games ago this section was kicked out of the game for yelling at UAB coach Mike Davis, and asking him such things as "How is Indiana" and also chanting Kelvin Sampson's name. Obviously these chants are aimed at getting into the opposing coach's head, and it worked because Mike Davis actually responded! The purpose of the student section is to not only cheer for the home team, but also make it difficult for the visiting team to concentrate. Whats so disappointing is the we are the home team, and the event staff works so hard to stifle the students and to protect the VISITING team. The event staff and police are constantly on the students for yelling at the other team, its no wonder so few students attend, we are disallowed from yelling! Memphis will be the #3 team in the country when they come to Moody, and CSC is going to treat them like they are the home team, its ridiculous!

I have actually noticed this from across Moody. Every time that section gets loud, CSC goes over and talks to them. As long as you are not being foul, I don't understand how they can tell you to be quiet. Email Coach Doh---I bet one of his staffers would check into it. Heaven forbid we create an unpleasant environment for the other team.

And you are right, the Memphis game is going to be bad. They will bring busloads of hillbillies to the game. I was stuck sitting in the middle of them last year and it was not pleasant.

Most peculiar. It seems as though you were dealing with an individual who has gone through life powerless, but now wishes to demonstrate his authority through silencing students that he knows have no clout in the eyes of management, as students do not have the resources to retaliate in their defense as might a more financially able adult would. CSC has often been problematic, but such behavior on their part is inexcusable. Not only are they ruining the intended atmosphere, they are asserting control over the very venue that hires them.

What a ridiculous policy. I have a buddy who sits by the visiting team's exit to the locker rooms for Stars games, and the staff there allows them to yell at the opposing team as long as they are not being obscene. Seems to me this is a no-brainer.

I think Coach Doh would be all over this, especially since he practically leads the cheers of the students behind the SMU bench from time-to-time.

That is ridiculous! I'd love for them to ever try and say anything to me. They would quickly become the outlet for frustration.

I believe that Conference USA policy says something about limiting or excluding fans behind the visitors' bench. I haven't seen actual language, but have been told this before.

I know that Duke had a "buffer zone" of about 5 rows immediately behind the visiting bench where visiting fans and/or neutral and/or "well-behaved" fans could sit.

the most frustrating thing about being told to quiet down is that we are not being obscene...I would understand the problem if we were continually swearing, but the majority of the time we have clever ways of making fun of the players. Case in point, the UTEP player, Watts, had the ugliest shoes anyone has ever seen....they were black and orange and looked like he jacked em from some kid on Halloween...during timeouts we made fun of his atrocious shoes and the same CSC guy told us to knock it off and we would be told to leave if we continued. This guy obviously has never been to a competitive sporting environment and has no clue what fans are supposed to do. Its ridiculous that we try to create a comfortable atmosphere for the visiting team, I am sure SMU does not get the same kind treatment on the road. How involved is Duke, UNC, UCLA, and other top D-1 schools event staff in stifling the student body? Its just another example of SMU saying they want to be top 25 but not allowing the students to be behind the program...I guarantee the students will be at the game in full force, I just dont know how long we will be allowed to stay...

I sent Doh a note. Unfortunately I am about 25 years too old to be allowed to sit in the student section but I support you guys (as long as you are "mostly" behaving yourselves). Have fun--be loud!

at Duke the students sit on the side opposite where team benches are (i.e. the teams are seated in the area equivalent to in front of the blue seats at Moody)

I have mentioned this before but in the "old" days we sat behind the bench and were relentless in yelling at the opposing coach. Abe Lemons was the best at getting into it with the students, all in good fun and sportsmanship. Well kinda good sportsmanship. I do not understand why our arena can not be one that the oppositon does not like coming into for a game. Even if the crowd was small, a handful of rabid students could make a dfiference as long as the spirit was clean and not overly abusive.

I am one of those people who sits behind the visitor's bench and it is ridiculous. Although I do not personally yell at the opposing coach, I heckle the players with the usual. but everytime anyone says ANYTHING, it doesn't matter if someone is cheering FOR smu, the guy flips out and calls the police over. To be honest, the people yelling aren't saying bad things, just heckling the coach for getting mad about a call or stepping on the court. Something must be done about this because in my opinion as long as you stay in the realm of shouting reasonable things you should be allowed to say whatever you want. The security would probably kill themselves if they were at duke and heard the things some of students yell. Come on, we rooting for the home team!

The guys that got kicked out were really giving it to UAB's coach. He looked like he was going to cry at one point, I found it really funny. However, that female cop and Frodo down there keep making them shutup, even when they weren't cussing or anything of that sort.
