Women want Title IX for science, engineering, math

http://www.american.com/archive/2008/march-april-magazine-contents/why-can2019t-a-woman-be-more-like-a-man

Where is the cry for a quota system to bring men into parity with women in english, social sciences, and female studies?

You think this is a fringe movement, but even here at SMU we have this:

http://www.smu.edu/caruth/institute/wise.asp

The engineering school has a goal to make half of its graduates women. Shouldn't the goal of the school to make the best engineering graduates regardless of sex, race, ethnicity, etc?

If women only make up 20% of graduates nationwide in engineering, you have one of two things - either there is widespread, massive, blatant sexism at all levels of science and engineering education (obviously not the case) or perhaps women just aren't as interested in engineering as men? Maybe men tend to just not be as interested in other subjects as women?

If you are trying to get to 50% male/female in an environment where interest in engineering is not 50/50, then you are necessarily passing up more qualified prospects, and choosing other less qualified prospects, solely on the basis of sex.

That is sexism.

Furthermore, if you are filling your school with less qualified prospects, you are necessarily watering down your curriculum so as to not fail those prospects. Thus, you are damaging the engineering school.

Bottom line is, it is morally wrong to give preference to one race/sex/ethnicity over another. If SMU wants to help the 'underprivileged' it should be focusing on those who are academically qualified but financially burdened. It should not be focusing on people simply because of the color of their skin or the quantity of X chromosomes.

This thread is getting deleted.

While it still up:
I completely agree. Affirmative action is reverse racism, no matter how you cut it. There is absolutely no reason ANY applicant should be given preference over any other. Your genitalia doesn't dictate how good you are at something, and it damn sure doesn't gauge your interest in it.

I agree completely. And I hate Title IX. I'm all for equal opportunities, but I'm not for "leveling" the playing field artificially.

No more donations to the engineering dept. or any dept that promotes reverses racism & descrimination as for as I'm concerned.

Political correctness run amuck!!!

Aahh, motherhood wasn't that important any way (sarcasm)

PK - you're getting funny again. What have we told you about that.

But you're right.

Let's see now. I would be curious to see what the percentage of men that give to "their" college of choice vs. women? In other words, the older they get, I'd be willing to bet that % gets higher & higher. So in other words, good ol SMOOOO is talking themselves right out of big bucks 30 & 40 yrs from now - long after these poor little old descriminated against-women have gone back to motherhood & out of the workforce. Who the %^$$ is going to give the $$$ away??? It sure ain't the woman. Just another stupid move by SMOOO & all the other schools that do this $%$#!!! So much for excellence :?:

The feminazi movement has done more to destroy "motherhood" than any other ridiculous movement in the last 50 years.

Hey Samurai. Do you ever hit any baseball games over there? My son looks for Japanese baseball cards now & then. They're really neat!

My son would like to try some baseball there when he gets older.

Japanese baseball is very exciting. The players are very skilled, and the emphasis on technique and teamwork is a large part of the appeal. Be prepared for a number of differences if you are able to attend a game, largely in that the crowd will behave differently. Japanese fans are very organized in their cheers (which almost never cease), which is made possible in that the spectators are divided in the stands according to their team affiliation, such as at a football game. Most importantly, the concessions improve immensely.

Chase (my 14 yr old) has a cap & jersey from the Yomiuri Giants. I believe they are your Tokyo Giants (American Press refers to them that way)? http://www.japanball.com/giants.htm

One of these days we'll be there.
