I thought there were quite a few games that were exciting (Tulsa, Marshall, UTEP, UCF, TCU, and Memphis just because Moody was rockin'). According to ncaabbs.com, SMU increased it's attendance average by 1,106 people over last year with a pathetic nonconference schedule.
Pye is long gone. Anything he did as president that hasn't been un-done yet falls on the shoulders of Turner and his bosses up the chain. USF has gone from not having a football team to a BCS conference in the time Turner has been president. While the program was destoryed, there is no reason for it not to have been rebuit yet.
While some of this is true, the damage Pye did to SMU cannot be undone as easily as some would have us believe. Trends that are established are not easily undone. WHo knows whether WE would have been the invitee instead of Baylor if we had an aggressive president back then. I am ocnfident Pye could not have cared less about us joining a BCS conference, and at the worst, would have fought against it.
I for one, will never forgive Pye for his anti-athletic mindset, God rest his soul.
back on topic, plz. Can we please bury Pye's sorry [deleted] and talk about the roster, the direction of the program, how we are getting a juco PG w/14 kids lined up for ships currently etc
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Wasn't Gene Banks the big time recruit that Coach K signed to helped turn Duke around? I believe Jim Spanarkel also played on that Duke team that BTW played in Moody when that class were sophmores I believe. However, it is NEVER just one player-people that talk like that have a superficial understanding of the game. That has been a mindset that took hold under that stupid Doug Single who was the first AD after the DP. Single and all his little butt-kissers used to talk about "All we need are a couple of Doak Walkers in Football" and 1-2 players in BB and we can complete. The start of a long 20 road to Hell.
Gene Banks, Mike Gminski & Jim Spanarkel were before Coach Ks time. He didn't recruit any of them. The road to respectability in basketball comes on the backs of one or two marquee recruits in a league like CUSA. Obviously, Memphis is loaded, but who in the league can handle Demarcus Cousins? IF you look at our roster, we need to clear some dead weight and get a difference maker or two. Next years team is chock full of athletes, role players, and extra fouls to give. What it needs is a go to kid that can get a bucket when everything else breaks down “When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones
Next year's team is full of sophomores. I think the biggest question is who the leaders will be. We lose Killen and Roberts, and a lot of hustle with Ritter. Who is going to step up and lead this still young team? Bamba? Papa?
I think that at this point it is Turner's responsibility. When Copeland was released a number of alumns did tell him that first the football coach, then the AD, guess whose next? A good number of people felt that the student body of the school was getting worse, not better--they really felt we would basically become a school for women, not just the majority as it is today. Another post claimed that the SAT scores were actually declining before Orsini, etc. I don't know if that is true or not. I do know that the popularity of TCU at HPHS has increased with their football fortunes and they have the record to show it.
Not to get derailed by academia talk, but isn't SMU's academic reputation on the rise? Everything I hear is that its becoming increasingly more difficult to get into SMU and that our applications have gone up exponentially in the last 5 years. Is this true?
Back off Warchild seriously.
Yes. Applications are up. Yes. Acceptance rate is down. Yes. Avg. SAT scores of accepted are up. I would not describe them as having grown "exponentially." Applications for nearly all colleges are increasing. Acceptance rate for most universities, and especially private universities, are trending downward. Avg. SAT scores of accepted are up at most universities. This is not unique to SMU. Interestingly, the "yield" has remained relatively constant for years. "Yield" is the percentage of applications accepted that enroll. There are other institutions where this is increasing. Yield is a good measure of school interest. You want your yield to go up. When TCU football started playing well, their applications went up, their acceptance rate went down, but their yield went up. The yield went up so unexpectedly one year, they didn't have enough dorm space.
I want to believe that the two of you are right in terms of SAT scores, since Turner's arrival, etc. Also, the school has become much more popular in California. I was surprised to see the decline in students from Chicago and the rest of Illinois. I personally feel that SMU has had more competition from Baylor and TCU for male Texas high school students and of course I am great at stating an opinion for which I have absolutely no statistical evidence!
Sorry we digressed...I was disappointed in the season, especially the first half. I thought our team would fare better with weaker teams. But in hindsight my expectations were not realistic.
I think that Coach Doh progressed personally as a coach this year. He still gets emotional during the game and screams and shouts, but he appears much more positive with the players than his reputation that proceeded him suggested. He gave the appearance that he really liked these guys and was proud of what they gave him. His relationship with his team maybe the area he needed to work on the most. I don't know any players, but would like to know if they share this opinion.
I am slightly concerned because the nonconference schedule was so soft. SMU should always be able to beat teams with significantly more disadvantages than SMU. That didn't happen.
For the record, I really like Doh. I have a lot more faith in him than I ever did in Tubbs. We need to be better next year. I think we will be better next year.
