New JUCO PG Prospect

Postby Stallion » Fri Mar 14, 2008 10:18 am

...and this is exactly the kid I was thinking about that SMU should go after but might not be able to because of academic issues-he had to get a GED out of high school though-if we sign him its a sign that SMU is really willing to compete. His name is Dereck Williams from Western Texas CC in Snyder Texas. Averaged about 19.1 ppg(23 ppg over his last 13 games), 4.5 assists, 1.8 steals, 48.5% from the Field, 32.8 from 3 point land and 70.9% from the Line. Originally from the Jamaica section of Queens.New York. Listing High interest in SMU along with UTEP Dayton LaSalle(3/6 visit) and Santa Clara(3/27 visit). Had a very strong Soph year in JUCO. Not ranked by Rivals and no official offers but he is being pursued by many schools.

Texas Hoops Analysis: DEREK is a gifted scorer who can create and score from anywhere. He is very quick with the ball, can create and finish in the paint, has a nice mid-range touch, will hit the open 3 point shot, makes good decisions with the ball, pushes it up court, plays under control and is a quick defender on the ball.

Another Report:

Western Texas failed to make the regional playoffs with an 18-11 record, but received a standout season from 6-1 sophomore Derek Williams. A Queens (NY) resident who attended Genesis One Prep (MS), Williams averaged 19.1 points, including a 33-point effort in the season finale against playoff-bound Odessa. His prep teammate, Brawley Chisholm, a 6-2 soph guard from the Bronx, added 7.0 ppg. while Rasheem Jenkins, a 5-10 freshman from Bronx (NY) Wings Academy and Laurinburg (NC) Prep, had 4.7 ppg. in a reserve role.

The Rub is however that Genesis One is an unaccredited prep school which I would think would make his recruitment to SMU difficult if he got substantial hours at the school.

Not getting him would be one thing. Not getting him, having him go to UTEP, and hearing him say he wanted to go to SMU and could not get in, would cause me to beat my head against the wall.

We already have 14 scholarship players next season with only 13 scholarships to give. If we added this JUCO PG, which would obviously be a very nice get for us, that would mean we are expecting at least 2 players to either not to return next season or the new commits to go to prep school. Who do we think those guys might be?

TK, Bennie, Nayakundi, and Cam are really the only players that could have beef about playing time. However, Nayakundi redshirted and if he intended to leave prolly would have transfered at mid year I would guess. Not really sure what is in the minds of the other 3 guys. Also not sure about which of our incoming recruits might be headed to prep school or if they are even able to do so at this point. Any people in the know that might be able to shed some light?

I think the two you will see leave are Kwiatkowski and Spencer. Just a guess.

Think there's any culture shock in the transition from Queens to Snyder, Texas?

The odds of getting shot have just decreased dramatically.

I think if you go to a diploma mill, the new rules make you a non-qualifier, but two years at a JUCO purges the non-qualifier status and you have two years of eligibility. Will his grades transfer is a whole nother issue.

This Williams kid obviously can play. Michael Johnson @ Blinn also lists SMU as a school of interest & he is also a very good jc pg.
If we are going to lose a couple of guys then the other type of JC player we need to look at are the previously discussed Flemings & Ruzgas, both from Weatherford JC. Both avg around 20 pts per game.

I was thinking that watching the women's tournament. Marshall has a British player living in Huntington, West Virginia, and UTEP has a couple of Polish players in UTEP. They must feel like they got dropped on the moon.

i think that 2 of the 4 new recruits are going to prep school which would leave room for a JC point guard - Robert K was red shirted and i believe Bennie and TK are going to apply for medical red shirts
