If that is the case, not good for SMU. Scott is the sober son, and the better coach.

Sean? Surely he's not leaving OSU, is he? If so, what a coup for TCU.

Don't know anything about Scott, other than his family pedigree. What's his story?

Scott is taking Oral Roberts to the NCAA tournament for the 3rd year in a row. He's done well there, they're a competitive program.

If I'm Scott Sutton, I can do better than TCU. That job has nothing to offer.

600,000$ a year is a lot to turn down, for Scott.

dont think that will be a problem

If I'm Scott Sutton, I'd look at Missouri St. before I would TCU. Better conference for basketball. Support is there. His salary will be very strong. I just don't ever see TCU really making any noise in the MWC in men's basketball. This sport suffers from being in the MWC.

I don't know - as much as all things Frog-related make me want to puke, it's got to be a better job than Missouri State. If FrogieFever is right that they're going to come at him with $600K/year, it's a done deal.

from the Star-Telegram:

The TCU Horned Frogs have ended the Neil Dougherty era. The men's basketball coach will not return for the final year of his contract.

TCU athletic director Danny Morrison met with Dougherty on Sunday afternoon, three days after the Frogs finished out Dougherty's sixth season with a 14-16 record -- their third sub-.500 season in a row. They went 75-108 in his tenure.

"No question, I would like to have won more games, but we weren't fortunate enough to do that for whatever the reasons," Dougherty said after meeting with his team Sunday evening. "My efforts in trying to do things the right way and push the kids to become better students, athletes, people -- we did all those things.

"We did everything except win enough games. I don't regret anything else about what happened here during my tenure at TCU."

Dougherty's six years were full of ups and downs. He took the team three rounds into the NIT postseason tournament in 2005, but that was followed by a six-win season in 2005-06.

This season ended Thursday with a last-second 89-88 loss to eventual champion UNLV in the Mountain West Conference tournament. The Frogs were the No. 7 seed in the tournament, their highest seeding since joining the nine-team Mountain West three years ago.

"The contributions Neil has made to this program over the last six years have been many," Morrison said. "He cares deeply about the student-athletes and had their best interests at heart. He has certainly put a lot of time and effort into this job."

Junior Kevin Langford, who led the Frogs in scoring and rebounding this season, said the team was just trying to take it all in after learning the news.

"I couldn't really get a feel for how everybody was feeling," Langford said. "Nobody really said anything."

TCU will immediately begin a national search for a coach, but no timetable has been set for a hiring.

Morrison said the school is not limiting its search and that proven head coaches, young up-and-comers or even assistants at big programs are potential replacements.

"We want all the factors that make great coaches: passion for what they do, excellent recruiting, excellent coaching, caring about the players, caring about academics and good citizenship," Morrison said.

"We really want somebody that has the full package. We want to find the best coach for TCU."

Some of the likely candidates are Oral Roberts coach Scott Sutton, Wright State coach Brad Brownell and Buzz Peterson, the NBA Charlotte Bobcats' director of player personnel.

If the Frogs really want to go for a big name -- as some expect they do -- ESPN analysts Fran Fraschilla or Steve Lavin, or Auburn coach Jeff Lebo could be in the mix.

Whoever takes the job would be taking over a program that hasn't won a conference championship or been to the NCAA Tournament in 10 years, since 1998 under Billy Tubbs.

"This is not the easiest of jobs, but I enjoyed the battle through the whole thing," Dougherty said. "As I told Dr. Morrison, I've been fighting, but I'm not tired of fighting."

POSSIBLE TCU COACHING CANDIDATES

Brad Brownell (Wright State coach) Formerly the coach at UNC Wilmington, Brownell has built and improved both programs.

Fran Fraschilla (ESPN analyst) Fraschilla lives in the D/FW area, has coached in the Mountain West (New Mexico) and has taken a lesser-known team (Manhattan) to the NCAA Tournament.

Steve Lavin (ESPN analyst) The former UCLA coach is known as a great recruiter and would bring instant credibility.

Jeff Lebo (Auburn coach) Lebo has helped turn around a struggling Auburn program and would be another big name.

Bob Marlin (Sam Houston State coach) Marlin has five 20-win seasons as head coach of the Bearkats, and he knows Texas well.

Bob McKillop (Davidson coach) McKillop has done a great job at a school similar to TCU. Prying him away from Davidson could be tough.

Buzz Peterson (director of player personnel, NBA's Charlotte Bobcats) Peterson has won at smaller schools, taking Appalachian State to the NCAA Tournament and winning the NIT with Tulsa.

Scott Sutton (Oral Roberts coach)

Sutton has taken Oral Roberts to three straight NCAA Tournaments.
