From Mustang Maniacs and Texas Hoops Wire, with all credit to them for getting the first write-up on this.
"The current basketball team at Western Texas College may be only two years old, but it's already made itself a reputation among college recruiters. Now head coach Mark Berger can boast of his program's first Division I scholarship commitment. After taking two official visits, point guard Derek Williams has made his decision and the native of Queens will be sticking around in the Lone Star State.
"Derek has decided to commit to SMU," said Berger in a voicemail to TexasHoops.com.
This past season, Williams led WTC in scoring at a 18.4 ppg clip and he garnered attention from schools such as La Salle, Santa Clara, Dayton, and UTEP in addition to SMU. He made official visits to La Salle and SMU before deciding to become a Mustang.
TexasHoops.com will have much more on this developing news story so be sure to stay tuned.
Texas Hoops Analysis: DEREK is a gifted scorer who can create and score from anywhere. He is very quick with the ball, can create and finish in the paint, has a nice mid-range touch, will hit the open 3 point shot, makes good decisions with the ball, pushes it up court, plays under control and is a quick defender on the ball."

We used to have one that went by the name of Butch Moore. Here's to Derek being equally as successful.

Clearly PG is a huge position of need for us. Sounds like a solid prospect who has a chance to play right away.
Back off Warchild seriously.

a chance to play?? If he ends up at SMU, he is the starter from day one....with Walker and Rhodes as back-ups. My guess is that's how Doherty got him to commit.....he will be given the keys. We beat out some pretty salty b-ball schools to get him - Dayton, LaSalle, Santa Clara, UTEP.......
This completely changes the outlook for next season.

You're right, he is listed a SG, but he did average 7 assists per game his Sr year. That guy is a mystery to me.

i doubt Rhodes is still part of this team next year...BUT WHAT A SIGNING...the #1 priority for this team was a JUCO PG.
i finally expect good things from this squad next year.

I fully expect Rhodes to be part of the team next year. Otis is supoosedly his best friend from Oakland and with the departure of Roberts there is going to be some SG playing time open. If two of the incoming freshman dont go to prep school, I expect TK and Walker to be the ones not returning next year.

at the present time (assuming we don't offer an additional recruit) i don't think we are going to lose an existing player - it is my guess two of our recruits will be going to prep school
