This seems pretty common, probably will write a check for a lesser sum to avoid complications from both sides.
But I'm no lawyer.
Sir, shooting-star, sir. Frosh 2005 (TEN YEARS AGO!?!) The original Heavy Metal.

Interesting comment from the Advertiser's lead reporter that covers UH football.
I don't think JJ should have to pay the balance. I mean, what was he going to do? Sit out the final six months? I think not receiving the final six months of his contract is enough. If he doesn't get paid for the final six months and he has to pay $400,000, that comes out to $800,000, which means he coached for free last year. Besides, his contract used to run from January through December. It was moved to June as a book-keeping issue. He really should be under obligation to coach the five seasons, not five fiscal years.
It looks like in order to make book-keeping more convenient, JJ actually served an extra 6 months at no extra pay. If his contract still had ran through December, it would have been over before he left for SMU.
The other interesting thing is that if JJ does pay the money (which I think he will), that means that he got Hawaii to the Sugar Bowl (huge BCS pay day!) and they didn't have to pay him anything for the season!

UH (Houston or Hawaii) is bush league, should we call them Rainbow High? No disrespect towards the many honorable UH fans that have posted on this board, but their administration is pathetic!

The good thing is that the AD that got Hawaii into this mess is gone and the new AD is an honorable man who I believe in. Jim Donovan is the new AD, he played for Hawaii (he was an OL), served in the Athletic Department for a long time and moved up the chain, and when he got passed over for the AD spot (most think he should have been picked, but the Hawaii President had Olympic stars in his eyes) he started the Hawaii Bowl from scratch and did a great job with it.
I've met Jim Donovan and he even sat with us in the game this past season in Las Vegas (we had a block of 100 seats together in the group I'm with). I will be financially supporting the Athletic Department at Hawaii, where I had refused when I realized how bad the previous AD was. Until this year I just supported Academic scholarships and charities in Hawaii.

And I believe Mr. Donovan is a Servite High School alum....the same school my son (Evan Huahulu) goes to.

I think June owes the money. I think Leigh Steinberg's argument that Jones' duties under the Hawaii contract were completed by January are "creative".

BRING BACK THE GLORY DAYS OF SMU FOOTBALL!!!
For some strange reason, one of the few universities that REFUSE to use their school colors: Harvard Crimson & Yale Blue.

ProudMama,
You are correct, Jim Donovan is a graduate of Servite High School in Anaheim.

Stallion,
I think one of the "issues" may be that Hawaii may owe money to JJ. In the past, the coaches had to wait months for their bowl bonus checks...one time it was something like 6 months. If JJ hasn't gotten his bonus for making a bowl game, then I think it would make sense to deduct the money Hawaii owes him from the money he owes Hawaii. No sense having Hawaii send him a check a few months from now...
Of course, this would not be the case if JJ had no bonus in his contract for getting to a bowl game...but I do think his contract had something about that.

mrydel,
I believe I have *more* posts than Stallion in the Hawaii forum that I mainly post in. One clear difference between Stallion and me: I do not subscribe to either scout or rivals...so I appreciate it when others (like he) post info from those sites.

I hope you were not offended by my statement. It was meant to be an inside joke in reference to Stallion's refusal to support SMU athletically until they "meet hjis demands" (my words, not his). I not only apprecaite his recruiting info but also appreciate your Hawaii slant on what we are experiencing.

mrydel,
It takes a lot more than that to offend me...I didn't realize that Stallion had a list of demands before he supports SMU athletically. That is actually not an unusual thing--for example, the University of Washington major boosters who have stopped giving to them until they fire their head coach.
The former AD had a clause in his contract that he got a bonus every year Hawaii's books were "balanced" and every donation had a direct or indirect effect on that. One year they made an accounting "error" and actually lost money instead of making the ($4,000) profit that the Athletic Department claimed. So, the former AD got his big bonus and I've never read that the Athletic Department asked for his bonus back after the accounting error was made public.
