I'm going to submit an article about this to the DC I think. We'll see what happens.

I do not have a problem with an on-campus pub, but people (and SMU) need to understand it shouldn't be for the reasons cited by most. These recent deaths were not caused by drunken driving (those that were alcohol involved) and further more were not committed by those of age to drink! If an 18-year old freshman wants to get smashed, he's going with some frat guy that knows a place that doesn't care. He'll get smashed and then make stupid decisions regarding his, and more importantly, other people's lives. An on-campus pub would not deter underage drinking, as they would be disallowed to drink in an on-campus, well-enforced (in theory) pub.

drugs are the problem at SMU (cocaine mainly) NOT ALCOHOL...this is the most absurd idea ever. the drug task force is made up of a bunch of Dumb FU**s.

I came here to point this out, but you beat me to it. Maybe SMU should open a cannabis cafe. You can't overdose on pot.

This whole situation is just dumb. Students in college are going to go party. It has happened for centuries, and will continue. Occasionally there are tragedies. The only way to avoid that is with education and a culture of looking out for each other's welfare, not ditching someone on the couch and taking off because you don't want to be busted when the cops find them. Trying to ratchet up prohibition for 18-20 year olds will do nothing. That has never worked, and will continue to not work. Nearly everyone on this board who was 18-20 when it wasn't legal to buy booze then drank anyway.

As someone stated, the big problem is mixing booze with drugs, because often the 'high' overpowers the 'drunk' and you can't feel when to stop the booze.

It seems to me that many of the recommendations are "academic" in nature and not designed to mitigate a drug/alcohol problem. One of the other recommendations, meeting with local merchants to encourage them to not serve to minors, is already on the books.

How about this for a recommendation: require students to not only attend classes, but also require students to attend football, basketball, soccer, and other athletic events. No alcohol or druges are (supposed) to be served at those events. Those events can create a great sense of community, where students and alumni can meet, get to know each other, and support their university. Maybe even invite the faculty. At least the non-militant ones.

I wouldnt worry about it too much.The idea of a campus pub is laughable to anyone with the decision making ability at SMU to actually move forward with the idea. Then good luck with UP. It's just not going to happen, not in our existence on this earth. And our children's. And theirs.

With all due respect to the current student senate, much, much better have tried to move this thru and ultimately saw the futility of it. But again, the student senate has been making pointless "nonbinding resolutions" for decades so this is not surprising. I just think they would be smarter than to bring the inevitable tidal wave of criticism that will come with this move.

An on-campus bar is a good idea, but not for the reasons they are giving us.
- At other campuses, the idea does work to create a center of life on campus. See Rice, Tulane, Notre Dame, U of Richmond, etc.
- It does NOT stop anyone from going off campus and getting drunk

We do need a center of campus life...anyone who has walked this campus after 4 PM can see that we are lacking in that respect (and if you don't believe so, go to any of the aforementioned schools and compare). However, this should be accomplished outside of the guise of this so-called Drug and Alcohol "Task Force."

One previous poster nailed it. Drinking is not the problem at SMU. Every college in America has an undergrad/underage student population that drinks and drinks often. Believe me it happens everywhere. DRUGS ARE THE PROBLEM. Namely, cocaine at our university has become a plague. Hell I knew dozens of kids that did coke during my time at SMU b/c it was literally everywhere. I'm not sure what can be done to curtail this but that is the real issue at SMU. Its not underage drinking.

Oddly enough, I never once encountered cocaine when I was at SMU. I heard rumors and knew of people who supposedly did it, but I never saw it myself. Shocking considering the number of nights I spent at parties rather than studying. I guess I was far more sheltered than I ever imagined.

edit: I did see it being done in the bathroom of a restaurant off of Knox, but I can only guess that the girl involved were SMU students.

I certainly don't mean to suggest that a majority of SMU students partake in drug use/abuse. Its a minority, but there is that element at our school. This isn't a situation where SMU should be singled out. I'm sure there are hundreds of students at every major university that has some kids doing drugs, but (this may not be well-received) but the perception of cocaine being a "rich person's drug" I think has a certain allure to some of our students. Sorry its just my opinion.
