Thursday (3/20) practice observations

I have been to most of the practices, since I have no idea who the players are by number I woundn't presume to assess any of the players.

But, what strikes me are several things.

First, it is a relatively quiet practice atmosphere. There almost no yelling or screaming. Special team and offensive line drills are more vocal, but the practices are quiet.

Second, rarely do you see two or three players talking amongst themselves. There is no joking around. When I see players converse, it is about the last route that they ran or how their hands should have been set, etc. These guys are listening.

The coaches seem to be everywhere. Most have pleasant expressions, constantly pumping the kids up, constantly teaching---coaching.

Repetition and repetition seems the key to JJ's style. He is gradually installing his offense in pieces, like parts of a puzzle. They are learning the system by going through several series of drills, one day the series will be named and combined to form the plays, etc.

Finally, if you have the time, get the book that JJ was signing on the UH football team. The book is really about our new coach and his methods of teaching. We really have a special coach and he has brought some top quality assistants with him. He marches to a different drummer.

Will try to pay closer attention to the QBs next week.

Another alum in attendance along with Bischoff and Adami: former SMU defensive tackle Joe Medlin.

And, for you conspiracy theorists: Medlin is now the offensive line coach and assistant head coach at Mater Dei HS in Santa Ana, Calif. -- the high school of June Jones' last QB, Colt Brennan.

For those who assume this opens a recruiting pipeline and would like to begin guessing which players will become Mustangs, their roster can be found here:

Someone told me he's almost 270 now. With his strength, slap another 20 pounds on the guy and you've got an absolute monster.
I really shouldn't drink and type.

Can anyone give some suggestions on some good places to park when attending a practice?

Parking garage under the museum across from the practice field west side of the stadium.

Sorry to burst your bubble but Barkley has already committed to USC. DJ Shoemate is at our place tonight visiting with Evan and he just confirmed this....but it is a nice thought :D Here's a link to the 07 Mater Dei v Servite game...at about the 1min mark you will see Evan (#79) trying his best to sack Barkley. I gotta give it to Barkley, the kids got a GREAT arm.

Yes, that is a typo. Davis is about 6'2" and, believe it or not, has a drama scholarship already although I'm not sure exactly where. He had a knee injury this year and has had one surgery but will need another one soon and they are not sure if he will be able to play his senior year. He's a wonderful kid and I sure hope to see him well enough to play again next season.

The 11th graders come over too. We're a family at Servite :D

Keep an eye on Wyatt Baker, he'll be a sophomore next year.
