Jillian Samuels breaks SMU recordThe sophomore guard hit her 69th three-pointer of the season a few minutes ago, breaking the single-season record she shared with Andrea Cossey.
Re: Jillian Samuels breaks SMU recordSeems like that 3-pt.'er came at the right time, too...'Stangs seemed to pick up momentum after that shot.
Congrats to Samuels, especially with the great timing of that shot.
Sir, shooting-star, sir.
Frosh 2005 (TEN YEARS AGO!?!) The original Heavy Metal.
Samuels was awesome yesterday. Not sure I heard her call "glass" on her last one (or maybe it was her third - don't remember), but she kept us in the game when things got bleak.
72 threes in a season - first time ever 4 threes in an NCAA game - first time ever Congratulations to Jillian and all the Mustangs - get some rest and come back firing in the fall! "It's 106 miles to Chicago, we've got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark and we're wearing sunglasses."
... "Hit it."
Yes, with the 4 she made in the tournament she has 123 in her career. If she matches that total in her next 2 years, she would have 246, which would give her 10 more than Andrea Cossey. Currently Jillian is in 6th place all-time, but should move all the way up to second next year (she is only about 25 behind Katie Gross in second place).
If Samuels shot as MANY 3s as Cossey did, she might have the record already. Cossey was a great shooter, to a degree, but she started shooting as soon as she got to the arena. Samuels is a stud. But teams are going to be keying on her next year - she has to get in the gym and shoot hundreds of shots every day. Has to be more consistent and has to make her release even quicker, because teams are going to gear their defenses (at least in part) around stopping her. Also need to get her to the line more, as she's one of the best free throw shooters in the entire country!
You are absolutely correct in your assessment of Samuels. She has to get back to being an all around scorer. She can score in a myriad ways and needs to get back to taking it to the rack, getting in the lane, and definitley getting to the Free throw line. If she is encouraged to become the scorer she was out of high school along with Brittany Gilliam and Dee Wills doing their thing they will again be a formidable opponent for anyone. They must play an uptempo game, get out and run and play aggressive trapping defense. They should be fun to watch next year!
"Failure is not an option"
Samuels is unbelievable at the line. She didn't miss a single free throw against a C-USA team ALL YEAR, including tournament games. The last time she missed a free throw against anyone was Dec. 29 against Texas Tech, and she missed two in a game ... once all year.
She finished the year shooting .898 at the line, hitting 44-of-49 free throws this season. The problem is that she didn't shoot enough. If she had enough attempts to qualify, she would have finished first in Conference USA, and it wouldn't have been close (the C-USA leader this season was Houston's Twiggy McIntyre, who shot .858). Her average of .898 also would have placed her at No. 6 IN THE ENTIRE NATION. The top 5: 1 Gabriela Marginean, Drexel - 91.5 2 Laiken Dollente, Portland - 91.4 3 Crystal Jones, Eastern Ky. - 90.7 4 Andrea Lightfoot, Idaho St. - 90.1 5 Jacqui Kalin, UNI - 89.9 (6 JILLIAN SAMUELS, SMU - 89.8)
