Just this weekend I witnessed a Duck, an Ibis, a Longhorn, Tiger, Bulldog, Horse, Gael Force 1 (whatever that was), and even a Governor, all picking fights with the opposition. Notre Dame has many other things that are offensive other than their make believe guy on the sidelines. Just the fact all their games are nationally televised is enough for me to scream foul.

Last time I checked an "Irish" wasn't mythical. How is "Fightin' Irish" different from "Fightin' Sioux"? Would "Fightin' Sioux" be OK if their mascot had been some mythical human-esque creature from Sioux mythology?

My remark was only in reference to the leprechaun. I totally agree with everything you have just said. Fighting Longhorns, Fighting Mustangs and Fighting Tigers are ok. So is a Fighting Leprechaun. Anyway just remember the chant of the NCAA Tourney is "Let's Go Peay".

I think Notre Dame should take a page out of Arky States pc manual and re-name themselves the "Green Wolves" or some other animal name, as long as no animals would actually be harmed by being portrayed as a mascot, with an infitesimally small chance of possibly offending someone.

I think I'll write a strongly worded letter to the Jr. High I attended - their mascot is the Vikings, and I object to the protrayal of ancient nordic people as bloodthirsty savages with axes and horned helmets!

The football players at couch 'em's school always told the coach that they were 'Thor' after two-a-days.

I agree that the NCAA has a double standard. Illinois has to dump its chief, but Florida State gets to keep its spear at midfield tradition. Fighting Irish is okay, but North Dakota has to get rid of the Fighting Sioux. Marquette has to change from Warriors to Gold. William and Mary has to take the feathers out of their logo despite the fact they were chartered by the King and Queen of England to teach Indians. If it weren't so sad, it would be funny. The Washington Redskins have flipped a big bird at the PC police. And I hope they keep doing so. After all, the Dallas-Washington game has a great timeless subplot of Cowboys vs. Indians.

I for one laughed my [deleted] off with the ND cheer team. The one guy dropping the chearleader at least 5 times, and having to have the leprican there to help him, was humerous to say the least.
