Thank you SMU Football Blog! This SI Vault is awesome. I have read tons of articles for the past two hours dating back to when we hired Ron Meyer all the way to the June Jones hiring. I found out some new trivia and background information about the SMU Football Glory Days of Meyer, James, Dickerson, Collins, etc.

Check out the story at this link.
http://vault.sportsillustrated.cnn.com/ ... /index.htm That brings back some memories. I love the last two paragraphs. Pony Up!
I read some articles about SMU and the SWC dated 1984, 1985, 1986 and it is amazing how open everyone (SMU boosters, TCU boosters, Texas boosters, etc.) was to the press about payments, dollar amounts, and arrangments with players. It makes you wonder if we kept things more quiet back then we might have fared a little better from the NCAA.
I have gotten to know one of the "Naughty Nine" boosters recently and understand more of what was going on back then. I can see both the boosters' and SMU's point of view on who let the payments get out of control. In the end I sympathize with the boosters. It's a shame SMU can't find a way to involve them again in a more transparent manner. The recent letters from faculty complaining about the Circle of Champions fund for June Jones is a little dramatic if you ask me. I say that based on the SI articles I read last night. Anything Jim Copeland and Steve Orsini have done to improve the football team has performed within the rules and with full disclosure to the public. These faculty members who are writing letters are acting as if the Circle of Champions are out recruiting players for the coaches and are about to make payments to players. All SMU alumni have done is say, "Hey Mustang Club! Here is some money! We don't want to lose anymore.... take this perfectly legal and documented donation and make something happen." Sorry for the rant, but after reading the articles from the mid to late 80's I think people need to realize we have a long way to go before you can say we are out of control. ![]() "An all-everything player for SMU -- he played running back, defensive back, punted and returned kicks, among other things -- Walker won the Heisman in 1948 and was a three-time All-America. In one memorable 1947 game against Texas Christian, he had runs of 80, 61 and 56 yards."
I love Doak's expression in that pic
