Dodds Named All-America by AP
Honorable mention award caps off stellar career
April 1, 2008
DALLAS (SMU) - SMU center Janielle Dodds, who won countless accolates and carved her name throughout the school record book, capped off her standout career by being named Honorable Mention All-America Tuesday by the Associated Press.
Dodds led the Mustangs to a 24-9 record in 2007-08 - their highest victory total in program history - and their first NCAA Tournament bid since 2000. She finished her career as the school's all-time leader in points (1,861), rebounds (974) and free throws (478). She also finished third in SMU history with 110 blocked shots in her career. She ended the 2007-08 season with averages of 15.0 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game. She also had eight double-doubles this season, and 38 in her career - more than twice the career total of any other Conference USA Player.
Dodds' All-America honor was a fitting exclamation point on a stellar senior season. A preseason All-Conference USA selection by league coaches, Dodds led her team to victories over Western Michigan and Kansas to win the SMU Hoops for the Cure Tournament, and picked up tournament MVP honors in the process. She scored 20 or more points 11 times this season, and scored in double digits 26 times, earning first-team All-Conference USA honors at the end of the season, and was named the Most Valuable Player of the Conference USA Tournament in Orlando after leading the Mustangs past nationally-ranked UTEP in the tournament championship game.
Dodds earned Kodak Freshman All-America honors in her first season, and she also has earned all-conference recognition in each of her four seasons at SMU. In her first year on the Hilltop, Dodds established new SMU freshman records for most points (423), most rebounds (246), most field goals attempted (374), most free throws attempted (150) and most free throws made (114). Dodds also was named Western Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Year and first-team All-WAC in her first season at SMU.
Dodds is the only player in SMU history to earn All-America honors; she won honorable mention All-America honors from the Women's Basketball Coaches Association in 2004-05.
