I went out to the practice today with my 4 year old (he lasted about 20 mins, which I was happy with). Before going into Ford, we stood and watched Thomas Morstead and Andrew Galloway (and a couple others, I think) practice out on the fields. They saw us watching and took the time to come talk to him, let him see their football helmets and pads, and toss a football to him.

As great as I hope the team is this year, it's good to see that the players are that in tune with the fans...especially the younger ones. The whole way home he kept saying he couldn't wait to see number 15 play this year, and when we got home he went out and starting punting a football around the back yard.

It's simple, but I know it meant a lot to my little guy, and to me as well. And just think...last year, all we would've seen was a blue tarp.

My son had a similar experience with Craig James on the field after SMU beat Arkansas in Fayetteville. I still have that picture of my then small son in his SMU hat and jacket with Craig James in his dirty uniform standing talking to him. My son was an SMU fan from that point on and eventually graduated from SMU himself.

Jerad Romo gave my then 8 year old his Nike wristband. You'd have thought he hung the moon for him. My oldest's first college football game live and in color was USC vs. Washington State in Bush & Leinart's Junior Championship season. Romo's wristband in the UTEP upset that year easily had every bit of the panache that the USC game had for him.

And Justin Smart signed his SMU hat at Christmas.

He's a SMU fan for life.

Even if he goes to Harvard, which at the moment is his goal.

That's what college sports should be about. We do a deal called Junior Bobcat day before the start of every season where any kid that wants to can come and actually work out with the team (do a slower and gentler version of some of the agility drills the guys do and kick with the kickers and punters and do a throwing drill with the QB's), afterwards they do an autograph session. It's great for both the kids and the players in building a family feeling with the fans.

Why would you want to let your kid go to Harvard? - that school is way over rated and the culture there is poison. Life is about more then posturing.

Isn't this the same argument people make about SMU? Not saying I agree, obviously, but just keep it in mind.

And if he goes to Harvard...he won't even be able to use the gym during certain hours!

McCown threw my son his wristband after a game but it was intercepted and run back for a touchdown.

Speaking of which did anyone see that Josh McCown just signed a two year deal with the Miami Dolphins? He's apparently coming in to take the starting job.

He'd better screw his head on straight and stop turning the ball over so much. You don't start very long for a Parcells team if you give the ball back 3 times a game.
