What I will say is that interest shown from UVA/Kentucky & Wash St are pretty much all based on his being one of the best still available, as opposed to one of the best. Pretty much the Jai Lucas theory of recruiting. Hold out till Spring, watch your stock rise. That said, as you mentioned its all relative. He'd be a helluva pick-up for us, and his quotes in the Oregon Preps article is encouraging.

I think Jai Lucas was a much higher level prospect than McCoy but it is true that Jai's recruitment became much more heated during the spring when he was one of few "top players" remaining. Jai was considerd a top 50 ranked recruit nationally i think, or at very least top 100. I think he was at about 10ppg and well over 40% from the floor this year for Florida.

Also, it appears McCoy only wants to play B-Ball in college and would only try football if hoops wasn't turning out how he had hoped. Or maybe I read that incorrectly.

No doubt that Lucas was a higher rated prospect then McCoy. The comparison is based on the extra profile a spring recruitment gives you. As you stated, Lucas went from being a Top 50-100 recruit straight to the McDonalds game. A honor well above his ranking, but the circus around his recruitment, based on being p/r savvy and waiting till spring, got him the nod. He's a good player, but not truly special. He's not the best PG on his own team

NEW REPORT:

Although he is starting to get excited with the "bright lights" of Kentucky and Virgina and playing in Big Time Conferences like the SEC and ACC, SMU is sticking in there. Doherty has got to sell him on being a better fit at SMU. Has visit set next week to Kentucky where they set him up to play in their Derby Festival Classic tournament. The next week McCoy visits Virgina.

"I like all of those schools," he said. "I could see myself fitting in at all of them. SMU made a pretty big impression on me. They've shown me a lot of attention, and I like the relationship I've got with their coaches.

That is really quite impressive and is a great compliment to our coaching staff! Thanks for the update Stallion.

Also, UVA is in on Terrell Holloway and Wesley Witherspoon, both of which may have more impact early. I tend to think the UVA staff prefers those kids over McCoy, but who knows. Also, UVA got the commitment from National Top 50, Sylvan Landesburg, pretty much b/c they told him he could run point. They have a National Top 75 kid in 07, Jeff Jones returning at SG, so things are crowded.

Lastly, hope Self turns down Oklahoma St and they start courting Gillespie just around the time McCoy is scheduled to decide.

It is. We are playing with the big boys in this case.

Gillespie is a nut so who knows what he is going to do. My guess is that he will do what a reasonable man would do and go for the really big T Boone bucks.

Gillispie at OSU will affect our recruiting more than Bill Self at OSU will. I'd rather see Self there.

This is sounding a lot like the weeks leading up to Dia's signing. He was somewhere. Then he was at Louisville, and loved it there. Etc. Etc. So we've been in that situation once before.

And on the one hand you have Gillispie....and on the other hand Doh. You have to think the advantage goes to the one with the hankie in his pocket.

Terrell Holloway committed to Xavier today & Wesley Witherspoon is announcing May 1st. He has one visit left to Memphis. In short, this puts Virginia very much in the hunt for McCoy. They're going to strike out on their other prospects.

If we get this kid, help me understand how he and the JUCO kid from NY would fit here? Would he be the 1 and the kid from NY be the 2?

You look at the Juco for immediate help at point, and groom McCoy at the 1, while still giving him legit minutes. Walker & Dubois are combo's that need to fight it out for time.

Don't confuse who is looking at McCoy & his visits, w/how ready he is. He's a spring signee, and has gotten a noticeable boost in interest, simply b/c he's available. He'd be a great recruit for us, if we can get him, but he's not a kid UVA or Kentucky look at early in the process.

Ultimately, this can only help competition. There are only so many minutes, and so far, no attrition.

I guess I should have prefaced my question for when they are playing together in a couple of years. Not 08-09. But I do appreciate your take. If we snuck in there and got him, it would appear our guard talent has some serious upgrade to it.
