Figured you should see this from the DMN Chat with June Jones:

smustang2011: There was a lot of talk about SMU's academic standards for athletes, especially in recruiting. Is SMU now on a level playing field in terms of recruiting with other programs across the country?
June Jones: My understanding is that – I’ve only been here two-and-a-half months – we were able to get the players we needed and wanted. My understanding is it has been on a level playing field the last four or five years. Prior to that, it was an issue for the coaches. Asking those questions when I came here, it has been. If you’re an NCAA qualifier and we want you, you can come to school here.

I saw it. And I'm on board. I'll remind you that Jones was very critical of SMU's admission programs only a few years ago. I think the players that convinced me that there has been a real tangible change in the admission policy have really been in the last year or so although you might point to Givens a few years ago. But the real evidence is Elizee, McElroy, the Georgia Tech Transfer in BB, the Derek Williams (JUCO PG), Alex Odiari and some of the marginal low qualifiers who have committed in Basketball. Based on that tangible evidence and the creation of the Education School with public ackowledgement of the curiculum focused on athletes.-which I was looking for-I believe SMU has made a concerted effort to close the last few roadblocks. Therefore I am joining the Mustang Club and would encourage all alumni and fans who have had similiar concerns over the years to do the same.

That might be the first post you've ever made where I didn't want to vomit. Question is, with all the avenues available to donate to the Mustang Club (I've already donated twice in a span of a few months), what exactly is the hold-up?

Now, this is the time to post the link to Handel's Messiah and the great Alleluia chorus.

nice. btw, odiari was an academic all big xii selection so bringing him shouldn't have been an academic question, just behavioral...on second thought, as reluctant as smu has been to accept transfers, he could have been norman einstein* at osu and we still wouldn't have accepted him

yep as I was the one who originally noted over a half a year ago that Odiari was a freshman Big 12 All-Academic I took that under consideration. I also think that the Georgia Tech transfer coming from a prestigious university might have played a factor. But based upon their Odiari's legal problems and the GT Transfers' alleged academic problems I think SMU deserves the benefit of the doubt when considered along with other players. Bottom Line is I don't think that Odiari or the GT transfer would have gotten in in the past.

I agree with the Stal but I also don't think there is any way in heck that the point guard from Junior College get in before either...Miracles still happen...Go Mustangs!!!
