From ESPN
Evaluation Carr is one of the more underrated quarterback prospects in this class and his recruitment should heat up a lot in the summer and fall of 2008. He is the brother of former 1st round NFL draft pick David Carr and has a lot of the same physical qualities only Derek is taller than his older brother. Carr has very good athletic ability for the position. He has good foot quickness and he has good mechanics overall. He sets up quickly in the pocket and he gets the ball out quickly. Delivery is short and compact, but very, very quick much like his older brother. He does not have the classic over the top delivery of the ball and he could get some passes deflected at the next level as a result. He does a good job of moving in the pocket and he has very good ability when he pulls the ball down to run. He has decent speed however he lacks the elusiveness that would make people miss. He has very good arm strength and he can make all the throws that are necessary. Is a good ball handler, sell play fakes and shows crisp, quick drop speed. Is fundamentally sound with his mechanics. He gets good velocity on his throws and he shows the ability to increase or decrease the velocity as needed. He has good accuracy in the short-to-intermediate throwing game. He plays with good intelligence and he does a good job with his pre snap reads and he shows the ability to go through a progression. He is tough physically and he shows that he can stand in the pocket and take a hit and still deliver the ball. The best attribute he has is his quick delivery-- that ball comes out fast. He may be a bit of a late bloomer and is he has a flaw, it likely isn't physical. We are not sure if something is missing, but he should be receiving more attention than he is. Overall, Carr has a chance to be a surprise guy in this class and should continue to develop nicely. Notes Transferred from Clements High School (Sugar Land, Texas) prior to senior season.
Agreed - he looks terrific.
I'm guessing he won't be lightly recruited for long. Coach Jones will have to battle some big-time programs to sign this guy. After he signs, he can ask his brother to join the Circle of Champions. Just don't let David see Kevin Garrett on an alumni visit or anything (love the image of KG picking off David Carr and running him over on his way into the end zone back in the day. Go PONIES!
This is the first time since the DP that SMU is showing up on national recruit's list along with Notre Dame, Cal, Wisconsin, Utah, etc.
