Todd Dodge is uniquely situated to take full advantage of his outstanding ties to Texas High School Football. He had what had to be one of the best recruiting classes in NTSU history last year and I expect him to continue with that success.

When it comes to recruiting everyone competes against everyone else for players. Texas State this year signed players that were either considering or had offers from a number of FBS programs including some I believe in your conference. SMU competes against everyone from North Texas to TCU to Baylor for recruits. I think Jones reputation will help you land some top flight offensive players because they want to play in his system. The trick will be recruiting top defensive players since his system is known for its offense and not defense. Don't get me wrong Hawaii played good defense but if your name wasn't Colt Brennan no one outside of Hawaii fans knew who you were on that team.

UNT signed a lot of players in February that I guarantee would have signed with SMU if we had a coach in place all along. Their 2008 signing day class resembled our 2007 class in a lot of ways.

But that's fine. That's part of the hit you take when you make a change. Sometimes it's one step backward before you take three steps forward.

Todd Dodge will continue to get good high school players from the area based on his reputation and connections. He should do well, but he better start winning some games this year or his reputation will begin to fade. The arrival of Riley - a QB he can trust who already knows his system - should be a big help.

His biggest problem is not recruiting to Denton, it's recruiting to the Sun Belt Conference. Even if you think the Sun Belt was a better football league than C-USA last season, and some do, it's still a notch below C-USA in reputation and exposure, i.e. TV and Bowl opportunities.

Neither the Sun Belt nor C-USA is anywhere close to the Big 12, but looking at the schools in C-USA and the schools in the Sun Belt and it's no contest which has more of the recognizable, traditionally Division I-A programs.
