Texasscout's scouting report on Derek Carr

Postby Texasscout96 » Mon Apr 14, 2008 9:12 pm

SMU 86 sent Me a message and asked me to scout Derek Carr. I am still trying to get my hands on some full game fiilm of Derek, but here are my comments on Carr based on the youtube video and 1 game film that I got from 2007...

Some quick noted about Derek Carr:

1) Notice his feet. He has quick feet and sets up very nicely at the end of his dropback. When he stops in the pocket, you can see that his feet are positioned to throw towards his target and his head is already downfield.

2) He is a 3/4 sidearm QB. That is a technique thing that I'm just he learned a while back. He seems very comfortable with that style, but the issue with sidearmers is that it is easier for tall defensive linemen to knock down passes.

3) When he throws, he has alot of zip on the ball. You can notice in the longer passes that it gets out quick and stays very tight to the target.

4) He seems to be an athletic runner once he does leave the pocket.

On the negative side, I see him make some bad decisions on throws. On rthe game I saw of him, he rolled left, threw right. I also saw him throw a deep pass to the inside shoulder with the free safety coming over in coverage. Decisions should get better with coaching.

I do see a few negatives in terms of technique that can be fixed by Jones and Morrison, but I would definitely offer him and I hope the coaches do their best to make Carr a Mustang. So I'm glad we are already working to try to get him.

Sorry I don't have a full scouting report yet, but I'm working on it.
