Most wasted talent

Postby Nacho » Mon Apr 21, 2008 9:51 am

I have to go with Chris Butler. I know he is listed #2 on the depth chart but I think this guy has real talent and could do very well in this offense. Unless Martin shows something I haven't seen from him in a long time (first TCU game) Butler is my pick.

I strongly disagree with that. Butler was redshirted and because the Bennett coaching staff continued to misuse the RBs, Butler never saw the field because of their decisions.

When they finally put him in there, he did decently. But the problem is that your RBs need to get into a rhythm and our backs never did. Bennett went with the hot hand way too much and never stuck with one. Thus, our running game was a mess for the last two years.

If you want to find someone who is a waste, it would be Martin. After that freshman season, it's been a huge disappointment. I know he dealth with injuries his sophomore year. But last year was a monumental waste.

I can't believe I have to explain this. I didn't say Butler was a waste. I said his talent was wasted. He is explosive and very strong. Can catch too.

My goodness Nacho. He is just a Soph. to be. Give them a chance to waste him. He performed well last year and should shine in this new offense, but you have to wait at least until the first game of the season to know if he is being wasted. I do not think they were wrong in featuring Martin at the begining of last year. When they went to Butler, he showed some very good promise for the future.

You want to talk about wasted talent..how about Vinny Chase? I know he was behind Kennedy (who was vastly under utilized). But when Chase was on the field last year...we barley even looked to him. He had a few td catches, but he could have been a stud. Anytime you have a guy who had offers to Florida and other big-time BCS schools and lands in C-USA...you should expect him to produce. Now he moves to OT, hopefully he will be able to help us out there...nonetheless, very big waste of a great talent.

The biggest difference between the two is size...jj needs large RB's in his system to block.

I was thinking the same thing. If Butler was a senior, maybe, but he's only played one season??

I think by "wasted" Nacho means not Chris is wasting his talent, but that the previous regime did nothing with him. Nacho means he is the most talented player getting the least time.

Once again, he is only a soph. If you recall, last year was hyped as the return of the "old" Martin. He was in better shape, healthy and ready to take on the world. No way were they going to start a redshirt freshman ahead of Martin. As the year progressed, Martin did not perform to expectations and Butler was brought in and performed very well. Problem was that we continually fell behind and running the ball was not our main offense. But Butler did make a good showing last year as a freshman. Now he is a soph and should be in the running for some good playing time. Hopefully his talent will not be wasted. But to say he has been wasted to date is just not right.

I'd have to say Henderson was probably most wasted talent that we had on the team...I saw him run for about 150 yards in the first half against Texarkana Texas High his senior year. He should have been playing during the year other than kickoffs...There probably were some injuries but I look for Henderson to have a breakout year this year. I too like Chris Butler...but he played some as a freshman...and will play more now I think....Go Mustangs!!!

Butler did lose a parent last year.
He may not have the size many of you are talking about, but he makes up for it in heart, determination and drive.
Nacho is right. Anyone that saw him up close could see a RB with shoulders down and legs driving. He was a north south runner that always had postive yardage.
In the Memphis game many of us witness Butler making big play after big play. In the third OT we kept waiting on Butlers moment again, and he never took the field again.
The true waiste is not having the right player on the field at the right time for the right play. After they evaluate their personnel, Jones will have who he wants and where he wants them. There will be no wasted players.
I believe we will have 3-4 solid backs competing for playing time, including Andrew McKinney and Henderson.
Bring on the competition!
