From Wikipedia: "Meredith is the only quarterback to play amateur football for a Dallas area team (high school or college) and go on to start a game for the Dallas Cowboys."

Unbelievable.

Yes, that's what it says. Not really that surprising now that I think about it. I mean how many starters have the Cowboys had? Maybe 25 total? 20?

IIRC- Don Meredith was from east Texas and played football there. I do not believe he played non-pro ball in the Dallas area.

Sorry- my internet crashed before I could clarify my statement. I guess you could say his SMU playing was perhaps 'semi-pro'. OK?

My Cowboy history shows that John Roach of SMU (and Highland Park) started 4 games for the Cowboys in 1964 as a backup for Meredith and was eventually replaced by Craig Morton.

In 1964 John Roach started 4 games for the Dallas Cowboys according to pro football reference.com and went to SMU (class of 1956) after graduating from Highland Park (class of 1952).

Jerry Rhome started 3 games for the Cowboys in 1965/66 and was a graduate of Dallas Sunset High School (DISD) before going to Tulsa.
