Agreed completely. I live less than a mile from campus and was kind of looking forward to having an excuse to come and have a beer or two. This wasn't going to be a jello shots kind of place.
"Dr. Turner said he's not ruling out a pub in the future. He said very few upperclassmen and graduate students who could legally drink live on campus, which raises the potential of driving while intoxicated. "
Dr. Pye said he's not ruling out a winning football team in the future...

Here's an idea: Let the frats have parties on campus again, like we did until the early 1980s. There's your campus social life.

Sure, if you're SMU, you've got to put up with a lot of crap if you let frats host parties in their houses again. But you keep your alcohol-related problems contained to campus.

Let SMU's campus cops keep an eye on things, rather than getting outside law enforcement involved. Much tidier that way.

But if this is all prompted because of the three student deaths last year, the real issue isn't alcohol alone. Two of the three deaths were related to hard drug use. Only one was from alcohol poisoning. The focus should be on getting rid of the drug culture at SMU. People who ingest cocaine and synthetic opiates aren't going to be hanging out at the campus pub.

Then SMU would have to admit that there is a large cocaine problem. A few alcohol poisoning deaths look a little bad in the media - people just taking it a bit farther than most universities. People remember their college days and how many times something could have gone wrong.

However, two deaths related to hard drugs looks much worse, and people watching it on the new can't relate to it as easy. It's a much bigger deal. By focusing on the alcohol thing, SMU pulled a great PR save.
