ESPN rates him #18PG in the nation, here is there analysis

February, 2008: We would be surprised if he doesn't end up high-major. His upside is tremendous due to his athleticism (can get to the rim at will) and blossoming point guard skills.

McCoy has the ideal size and frame (fairly long arms and solid length) for the point, though at this point he is more of a combo guard. He has very good speed and quickness and the ability to break down defenders at will off the bounce. He can finish effectively in the paint (avoids contact very well), and despite his small stature, he can finish at the rim quite often in traffic. His jump shot is very good, and he can separate himself from defenders off the dribble as well (to get his shot off). However, despite his athleticism, he is far from a polished product for the point guard position. He has the ability to set up teammates, but he is far too concerned about getting his points (a tad too selfish). In addition, he launches too many ill-advised jump shots early in the shot clock and can force the issue off the drive when the opportunity is not there. Overall, McCoy has all the intangibles to be a solid D-I guard if he tones up his decision-making and creates more opportunities for his teammates.

McCoy is a good-looking athlete who plays the game with sound instincts and football intelligence. He possesses good height for a skill player with an athletically built-frame. Utilizes size well against smaller defensive backs when employed at receiver. Consistently wins the jump ball with proper body positioning, leaping skill, sound coordination and soft hands. Extends well away from his frame for the difficult ball. He lacks great separation speed as a route runner but can deceptively slip outside of defenders and up the seam on vertical routes. Snags the ball smoothly in stride and displays adequate fluidity making the first defender miss after the catch. Shows same athleticism and ball skills at defensive back. Flashes adequate hips and turns sticking to receivers in man coverage and good anticipation and plant-and-drive skill breaking on underneath routes in zone. He is a smart defender who places himself in the correct position to make plays by reading the quarterback and showing good coverage awareness. However, we have concerns that some of his production on both sides of the ball stems from savvy play and good athleticism; lack of speed and explosiveness as a skill player is a concern. he does not possess the ideal size to be a pure possession receiver or a physical strong safety; where his range is best suited. McCoy?s continued physical development could dictate college level and his position.

Picking the Ponies over Kentucky (the Wildcats' 2007 trainwreck notwithstanding) is a major coup for Coach Doherty.

Was Hopkins even rated No. 10 in THE NATION at his position? I know Hop had a ton of offers, but was he a top-10 point guard?

All football players must be on football scholarships unless they are walk-ons. Were this not the case you would see track teams throughout America stockpile linemen.
