Recruiting Stategy

Postby 03Mustang » Thu May 01, 2008 3:45 pm

This is the first year I've really paid much attention to early recruiting - just out of curiousity, did Bennett offer many players early? I don't remember hearing about 20+ players being offered at this point the last few years.

Was I just not as aware before or have we been more aggressive so far this offseason?

if anything SMU is-or perhaps more accurately was behind schedule based upon other schools and previous offers from SMU Coaches in issuing early offers. But based upon both Scout and Rivals SMU has stepped up their offers in recent weeks. Its a whole new Rodeo than 5-10 years ago. Almost all schools are getting their offers out in March, April and May. UT gets them out in February. I don't think you could in any way call SMU aggressive in this recruiting class until maybe the last few weeks-although that's not too unexpected after his recent hiring.

Anytime a new coach is hired it takes about a year or so to get caught up in local recruiting. See North Carolina and Minnesota. By this time next year they will have established more relationships in Texas and will have been to scout the High School games for recruits. But I think we are doing very well for a new coaching staff.

I don't see how anyone can make any conclusions yet-we have no commitments-most everybody else has at least several. Close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.

Let me clarify, I am talking about offers not commitments.

No clarification needed. If Stallion had read your post he would realize you asked about offers. Just Stallion being Stallion...
