Picking the Ponies over Kentucky (the Wildcats' 2007 trainwreck notwithstanding) is a major coup for Coach Doherty.
Was Hopkins even rated No. 10 in THE NATION at his position? I know Hop had a ton of offers, but was he a top-10 point guard?
Congratulations, Coach Doherty and staff!
Hop was a 5 star recruit and much more highly sought after than McCoy. However, this is still a fantastic get for SMU.

McCoy indicated in numeous interviews that he DOES NOT intend to play football at the college level unless basketball does not work out. Maybe this changed when SMU came calling but he is quoted on numerous occassions that he will focus exclusively on hoops to start. We will see if that changes.

All football players must be on football scholarships unless they are walk-ons. Were this not the case you would see track teams throughout America stockpile linemen.
Yes but I would think he could sign as a BB player, and then if and when he declares for the FB team the scholarship would be transferred to FB. My main concern is when can he sign. A committment of this level would be nice to have signed sealed and delivered ASAP.

While June Jones possesses a certain charisma, the average basketball player does not include his impression of the head football coach in his reasoning for attending a university to play basketball and basketball alone.

That's exactly what I was thinking.

And there is the flaw in your logic. Paul is no average basketball player.
I would love it to see Doherty and Jones work together on bringing in two-sport stars that the big boys will only allow to play one or the other.

WOW! This is HUGE. Not only are we getting a great player, but other top level players want to play with a great PG - we now have that guy.

Doh can sure recruit, lets see him lead a team now. The SMU job is all about talent acquisition, as Memphis & UAB in particular, are loading up. The only way you win and arms race is to have more weapons. Nice get DOH!
“When I first committed to SMU, I thought it would take a couple of years of building. But with these players coming in, we should make a run. We have a lot of heavy hitters. It could get real ugly for a lot of teams we play.â€- Jalen Jones

The meltdown at the UVA board, about lil ole SMU grabbing one of their priority recruits is delicious

Any word on the Kentucky board or is it the feeling of their arrogant fans that he wasn't high enough on their offer list.

Of course we do not even know if we want him until he signs.

I had heard that Jones offered one of his scholarships up for Doherty to use - this must be the guy.
